I Need Help!

As you know my wife died over two years ago now. My health has been iffy but has been slowly improving. Although I don't have much strength or stamina.

I've just received a letter from the landlord that as of the 1st of next month the rent jumps from $525.00 to $975.00 per month.

I cannot do this as i live on social security of $1023.00 per month.

I talked to the landlord and he was about as helpful as a rabid pit bull.

I'm driving a 20 + year old van that needs work.

No family, no friends any where near, except for this forum.

I need ideas of how to find a place I can rent with my income that will accept my pets. They are all the family I have.

I need people who could physically help me move my most important possessions, (I think you all know what that is).

At this point I do not have email because I don't have a cell phone, am trying to rectify that.
I think the PM system is still working.

Joe, i wish i could, but truly hope and pray that you find all the help you need. have you looked at help-wanted classifieds in other places? there are small towns and rural publications that you might find online. perhaps look into the rv networks. at any one time there may be thousands of people moving about the country, and some of them are networked together, and know a lot about what's happening along the roads. perhaps there are "rv sitting" opportunities, or vacancies where someone would appreciate an occupant.

and firstly, a cup of joe and some quiet time with bible, say in psalms, is an antidote to worry...

check with your local housing administration and see if raising your rent 90% all at once is legal.

I don't know about Indiana but here in Orygone that big a rent raise wouldn't be legal. I think we're capped at 10%/year.

I know that many churches have programs to help local people in need and you don't need to be a parishioner/member - you just need to have the need and be willing to ask. In fact, they are usually thrilled to help someone where they know the help is being used for the purpose it is intended, versus drugs/alcohol/a scam.

As a former landlord I would have needed to raise rent nearly that much if, even just to break-even when our insurance doubled; we were not making any profit on the rental (it was the house next door my aunt lived in and we bought after her death to keep so the homestead didn't bust up, so we paid more attention to getting a good tenant/neighbor than juat the maximum rent we could). So we set rent as 'mortgage payment + insurance + taxes' (and didn't even include the upkeep (new roof, new HVAC, new septic) we had to put in to it. SO - I can indeed see how a landlord might need to increase rent.

We didn't raise the rent that much though, as we knew we were going to sell the home to our daughter within a year, and thankfully that happened.

However I agree that if there is a law on how much rent can be raised, it needs to be obeyed.

And I agree that your best bet is a local church. I know many have strong opinions for/against certain religious subdivisions, but they all are generall filled with kind and Godly individuals. Our local Mormon church has an incredible outreach and has helped many in our community, so don't forget to consider that branch (they are probably the most pro-gun of the Christian faiths, too...).

Went to T-Mobile yesterday AM to see if wife's cell phones could be reactivated. Nope, although the phones had been running on T-Mobile towers their sim cards would not work. Turns out these were her govt phones and they wont work. Or so T-Mobile says.
After that I went across the lot to Walmart looking for fat guy jeans, didn't find any.
What ever was making me sick really hit me in there, wasn't sure I was gonna make it back to the van to get here.

Ended up in the doctors office yesterday afternoon. BP way up, super sinus congestion, difficulty breathing, chills, trembles, fatigue, pain. Just plain miserable.
MD gave me antibios for the sinus infection and some prednisone caplets for something. So far they seem to be helping. Other than some grocery shopping and phone calls (those are stressing enough) I'm gonna rest today and try to make a game plan.
Social worker at the DR office gave me a big list of subsidized apartments to call, we'll see what comes from that.

Forgot about the Mormons, I'll look them up.

Problem is the more time I spend on the phone the less time I have to pack and move that which I don't want to loose. Hense my need for physical help.

Am considering two alternative plans, nothing concrete yet.

I looked at the UNITED WAY, WILL CONTACT THEM TOO. < oops
