S&W 1854 Lever Action is Now in .45-70
I got a cool email from KyGunCo saying that the 1854 is now available in .45-70. I know a lot of people want something in 500 Mag and that it seem that would be asking alot but I'm holding out for a 460 Mag. I know Big Horn has theirs but they are so expensive. Do you think these new 1854 could survive either of the big magnums? I don't have a practical reason for wanting one for other BECAUSE.

If the 1854 could handle the bigger magnums I would think they would have all ready have done it. You Look like a young Man so why not Go For it and Go Big.? Here is a reasonable Spike Driver. https://www.gunsinternational.com/guns- ... =103018021

Grizz, I don't know about the twist in the barrel.....but here is some results................https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voMrfb2Q8DY&t=86s
Re: S&W 1854 Lever Action is Now in .45-70
my bad, i thought we were talking about a 45/70. the video is showing a 500 s&w. the results from my guide gun would closely resemble that gun. but my comment pertaining to the spin rate was meant to be funny. unless of course that is the actual twist rate. but i think not.45colt wrote: ↑Thu Apr 10, 2025 6:21 pm Grizz, I don't know about the twist in the barrel.....but here is some results................https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voMrfb2Q8DY&t=86s

I'd rather have ten guns that might have cost $3,000 each, than fifty that I bought for 'only' $800 each, and in the end would have spent less money anyway.
I learned that lesson late in life, so I have a bunch of 'decent' guns, but few 'excellent' guns.
I could have met my lever-action goals with just a few:
BHA 89 in 500 S&W
Marlin 1894cs in 32-20
Ruger 96/22 (integrally suppressed) in 22 LR
Honestly with the right reloads, those three would cover every practical/hunting need leverguns could cover for me.
Filling in 'gaps' could be done with a couple pointy-bullet or long-action cartridges, if I chose to use leverguns for those instead of bolt-actions:
30-30 or 35 Remington in a Marlin or Winchester
243 Win or 223 Rem in a Browning or Henry
Then if I felt it too difficult to up-load the 32-20 or down-load the 500 S&W for full 'coverage', I could add:
357 Mag Marlin 1894 CST
45 Colt or 44 Mag or even 454 Casull in a Marlin, Winchester, or Rossi
But instead of those 'few' (7) leverguns, I have a bunch, and many overlap/duplicates. There's nothing 'wrong' about that, but I have money tied up in having THREE 30-30's, and TWO 35 Remingtons, and a bunch of 'pistol caliber leverguns'.
So I look at something like a $3,000 Big Horn Armory, and think it would be nicer to have than four or five of my 'ok but duplicate' leverguns.
After all - you only live once..............enjoy stuff as best you can.
Plus your kids will have some cool stuff to inherit, instead of just a bunch of 'ordinary' guns (maybe 'special' to you, if they have sentimental value, but certainly not as 'valuable' as some of the premium ones out there).

I agree. There is nothing wrong with cheap guns, as long as they are what you want. I'd much rather have 1 very nice rifle that I really enjoy, rather than a dozen rifles that all are lacking to me in one way or another.AJMD429 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 10, 2025 8:23 pm .

I have officially left that stage of my life. We had our first baby last year so whatever projects I want to work on, I better already have. At least for a few years. If I happen to have an annual bonus, I can usually put the money to something new which is how I got my S&W model 17 but I still had to save up for it..45colt wrote: ↑Thu Apr 10, 2025 11:05 am If the 1854 could handle the bigger magnums I would think they would have all ready have done it.
