Surgery

Post by GunnyMack »

for Parker that is.
She has had a small cyst on her upper back behind her shoulder. The vet drained it a couple weeks ago but it has since refilled with fluid so I made an appointment for Tuesday to have it removed. When the vet drained it it was fluid with "stuff" in it. The vet assured me it's not cancerous.
I'm sure Sage is going to be beside herself without her momma!

Hope all goes well!
I had to have a large, fast growing lump removed from Jackson's right hind leg. Poor guy was gorked out of mind for a whole day. Some his antics were kinda funny but heartbreaking at the same time. It's been over a year and no sign of it coming back.

By the way, you were absolutely right about not getting Evie fixed too soon. According to my vet, the thinking on spaying a large dog and even more so for a giant breed is to put it off until after their first cycle.
I had no idea. It's been 18 years since we had our Dane fixed. The vet said that the health benefits are vastly improved for a giant breed to wait a year to a year and a half.
The adoption lady was all worried about "accidental" puppies, but I assured her that it wouldn't happen. I've had 9 dogs since I was in my early twenties and all but two have been female. I'm about two inches away from turning 60 and have a pretty good idea what to do. Their dog run has a 5' fence and she never goes anywhere without me. We're good. That seemed to placate her worries.

3 months and 35lbs... Hmm that's 10lbs per month x 24 months of growth = one very large lap warmer!
I never believed in the whole spay/neuter but, I looked at it as a money maker for the vet's. Dogs( wolves) have been around for a very long time and as far as we know they don't have the health problems our domestic dogs do.
Granted females that haven't been spayed can develop pyometra later in life.

Just personal experience, but all of my dogs have been fixed and lived long healthy lives until their last months. My lab was 16, boxer mix 15, my Dane was almost 11, JRT mix was 15+. The lab/ border collie mix I left with the Bimbo is 15 and just slowing down.

The only one that had a shortened life was a stray husky, probably a mix that i found abandoned in a vacant house.
Over two weeks or so he had bitten the Ice Queen twice, she didn't tell me because she knew what I would do. One of them was pretty bad. She blamed it on one of her horses that was a mean sucker.
The the dog got loose and took off after something heading for parts unknown. I figured, up yours dog and didn't bother chasing after him.
Next thing I know is he is attacking the neighbor's 25 year old Quarter horse that broke out of it's pasture and was heading for the road.
I grabbed the '06 and ended the fight. Got the horse back where he belonged and let the neighbor know what happened.

I dropped Parker at the vet at 0800 this morning. At 1045 the vet called to tell me the surgery went well, she is in recovery and WANTS TO GO HOME!
I'm on a job site and can't get there for at least a few hours. I guess they get to listen to her howl & carryon for a few hours.

Just picked her up! NOT a happy camper!!!!
I'm sure she is a bit dopey from the pain killers.
So 14 days of leash walking, no couch, stairs and very restricted activity. I have to get a crate out for her.

Finally!- she had a movement this afternoon!
The residual pain meds must be wearing off as she is whining a little. But her tail is working again- that's a good sign!

So I've kept the dogs to minimum activity a week longer than the vet said to. Today was 4 weeks post op. As I was doing some yard work the girls were out sunning and when I quit I decided to hit a ball for some fun. Parker and Claro being sisters and ol brownie is a bit of a 'B' she decided to give Parker a chase which got Parker into full blown zoomies and her incision opened up!
Of course it was 4:51pm when I saw it and called the vet. It's not bleeding, just opened up. So tomorrow morning off to the vet so they can glue it up.

you can do that with super glue, the fast kind. i use it on myself, there's no sting, and it closes and keeps clean the part that bleeds...

All I have on hand is slow set stuff, for wood work. I told the vet that and he said not to use it. Since it wasn't bleeding I didn't put styptic powder on. I could have gone to the local 24hr emergency vet and dropped a weeks pay ...

As for using glue , I had a band saw mishap, on a Sunday of course. I hit a walkin clinic and the PA tried glue on my filleted knuckle, it didn't hold. Then she was installing stitches and I made a remark about Gorilla Tape, she laughed pulling a stitch all the way through and then had to do it over!
