Favourite Hymn.....
Just the other day I was in a medical facility lobby waiting for the old lady.....er pardon, my beloved bride of 12,637 days.....
And me and a very elderly distant kinswoman met for the first time in decades. The subject of hymns & sacred songs and the like came up and her first choice was the obvious "amazing grace". I thought a moment and my choice was a tie between "Living for JESUS" or Albert Brumley's "JESUS, Hold My Hand".
She sniffed an indignant sniff and protested, "That ain't no hymn ! That's a contemporary song. Why, I was a teenager when that came out !"
They called her name and we parted for whatever torture the leech/sawbones had planned.for her. I had my wife's phone which is quite a bit "smarter" than mine and kenned 1933 for the commercial release of "Blessed JESUS, Hold My Hand". The lady had said she was a teen when it came out so that puts her birthdate at about 1920. That ciphers her age to either 105 or nigh-on it ! I knew she was old but not quite that old ! Memories are so susceptible to error as far as chronology is concerned.
Anyways, favourite hymn(s) ? Your thoughts ?
Thanks in advance for any and all replies.....

Re: Favourite Hymn.....
Hermano Oso (grizz) that last y.t. link is most interesting re. the history of the song. As for guitar chords in the most accepted key, you have to have at least seven fingers to play them on a six-string.....definitely not tear/beer country/western chords.
B u t.....on a g-b-e tuned three-string with its pseudo/quasi, kind of sort of chords I think I can manage the B7 and Bm and F#maj. at least a suggestive representation. Stay tuned for updates.
Belay that last.....
Found a version in the "normal" guitar friendly key.....

Thanks Ray for the link. You played a toy guitar better than i play the baritone uku, which is my learner choice.Ray wrote: ↑Mon Mar 31, 2025 8:05 am Hermano Oso (grizz) that last y.t. link is most interesting re. the history of the song. Here is the very most bestest stringed instrument music reference that i have discovered. so far.
https://interactive-fretboard.com/en/home/
pick your instrument and then click into any key, any scale, any chord, all interactive. it's so easy to see how simple and complicated music actually is. the goal is to make a joyful noise, which seems to necessitate a certain degree of organization.
thanks,

Re: Favourite Hymn.....
1. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!
2. Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea.
Cherubim and seraphim, falling down before thee,
Who was and is and evermore shall be.
3. Holy, Holy, Holy! though the darkness hide thee,
Though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see,
Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
Perfect in pow'r, in love, and purity.
4. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity

Did grizz mention a d-g-b-e ukulele ?

And an e-a-d tuned "alto" cigar box for running through an octave pedal to play bass in an on-stage substitution emergency. Problem is you have to be able to keep time with the kick as they say.

How Firm A Foundation by The Petersens
https://youtu.be/dx4eIr4x5yo
How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word
What more can He say than to you He hath said?
To you, who for refuge to Jesus have fled
Fear not, I am with you, oh be not dismayed
For I am your God and will still give you aid
I'll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand
Upheld by my righteous omnipotent hand
When through the deep waters I call you to go
The rivers of sorrow will not overflow
For I will be with you, your troubles to bless
And sanctify to you your deepest distress
When through fiery trials your pathway will lie
My grace all-sufficient will be your supply
The flame will not hurt you, I only design
Your dross to consume, and your gold to refine
That soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose
I will not, I will not desert to its foes
That soul, though all Hell should endeavor to shake
Well, I'll never - no never - no never forsake
That soul, though all Hell should endeavor to shake
I'll never - no never - no never forsake

Re: Favourite Hymn.....
I had almost completely forgotten this one.....
What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer!
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
take it to the Lord in prayer!
Can we find a friend so faithful
who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
take it to the Lord in prayer!
Are we weak and heavy laden,
cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge--
take it to the Lord in prayer!
Do thy friends despise, forsake you?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In his arms he'll take and shield thee;
thou will find a solace there.

Re: Favourite Hymn.....
One thing I dislike is when someone feels the need to add something to these wonderful old hymns. Perhaps a Segway or chorus or some such. It always takes away from the original fine old hymn!
Reminds me of a joke:
A young musician was asked what they did for a living. They responded:
I write praise and worship music
I write praise and worship music
I write praise and worship music
I write praise and worship music
I write praise and worship music
