Old Gun Domain Respository

Post by ikocher »

With LASC and Dark Canyon going down recently, it's got my worried about these articles for future generations. I'm not exactly old and got started with the more traditional side of shooting about 2019 (my early 30's). Watching those domains go down bothers me. Thankfully the Wayback Machine is a non-profit program but still it might be good to have options.

When LASC went dark, I started wondering about keeping my own repository on the blog. So far, my page's format doesn't really work well to build out similar to how the archives here or LASC's are/were indexed. I will probably have to start building a real website instead of running off of the Blogspot architecture. I'll be using hyperlinks to the Wayback Machine for the time being. Not every domain is dead as a heads up but adding it to the list could be useful incase something happens while I'm busy. This way, I don't have to rely on a shoddy memory for every domain I've found useful.

It's not elegant but it's easy to update as I go. Let me know of any other pages/domains that should be added and I'll see about digging them up. I just have a hard time stomaching the idea of losing information like this. Not that it would be gone gone, you just have to know where to look. That can be tricky.

BTW, I don't monetize anything and have no ads. My blog makes me no money. Period.

I think this is an excellent idea. So many good online articles have been lost already, the castpics articles were quite useful and are now unobtainable for exampme.
My question is how long does the internet archive site keep stuff? Is there an expedient way to capture those articles in a way that is more or less digitally "permanent"? Of course the real answer is to print anything you really want.

Best,
Eric

You can pretty much download a website if you put the effort into it, including the backgrounds and formatting. It would depend on how dedicated you are. Tell me more about this castpics. I'll see if I can do something

Edit: I found Castpics and added it to the list
