RL7 powder rumors

Post by TedH »

I have seen multiple posts in various places claiming that Alliant RL7 powder has been discontinued. I burn more of that than just about any other powder so I started to become concerned. I have a personal contact with Alliant that I asked about that and he assured me it hadn't been discontinued. It's just very scarce due to the current worldwide shortage of nitrocellulose. I'll still grab a can whenever I see it, but hopefully, eventually, supplies of powder will bounce back.

I'm with you Ted. I use Re7 a lot, as a search of my posts will confirm, and have recently been able to stock up against future uncertainties. :D

Good to hear that it’s not discontinued. I am getting low myself and would hate to do without.

It’s been forever since I have seen a pound of it, and hope to try it in the .44 WCF one day soon.

I still see it online at a lot of places. Though most of the Alliant stuff is MIA, I still see a good bit of BE-86, Power Pistol, RL-7, RL-10x, and RL-50 listed. Alliant must have been sitting on a mountain of BE-86 for that to still be around.

MidSouth shows both the 1lb and 5lb still in stock.

Yikes that more than VV powders, guess they weren’t sitting on a stockpile of Reloader 7 :(

I've pretty much been immune from shortages of RL7 and 5744, as I habitually order a new 8 lb jug whenever I open one. I'm probably sitting on about 14 lbs of each, when I probably shoot less than 2 or 3 lbs during the course of a normal year. And the last few years have seen much of my smokeless rifle shooting cut back. I do need to make a trip up to AR and buy another case of 3F BP.

That’s the way to do it. I wish I had been doing that with Unique.

Kind of wonder what will happen when the war slows down in Ukraine.

Also wish VV would make something like VV-125 to fill in the gap they have between 120 and 130 which would likely be a good substitute for Rl-7.

I've also had luck using Shooters World AR Plus and H-322 in cartridges I use Rl-7 in. But I'm out of AR Plus and nearly out of H-322. I also have some AA-2200 which has been good for lighter bullets in the 30-30 and decent with cast bullets in it.

H322 is back in stock at a lot of places. As well as IMR 8208XBR. The Australians must be shipping powder again. Next stop ... Trail Boss.

Im also very fond of Reloader 7 and am thankful to have an unopened 8lb jug after the one I'm on.

The 3 powders Id like to get more of are 5744/Buffalo Rifle, 4759, and 2400 (for low volume charges in rifles, i have plenty of others for handguns).

Wow ... even for an older bottle. Must have been on the shelf a while. I'm headed to a shop that has RL-7 in Baton Rouge in a couple of weeks. Actually, there's a shop near me selling a 5lb jug for $200 even.

I just picked up two pounds in a town 12 hour drive away! I just couldn't find it anywhere, I understand they aren't shipping any to Canada, something about labeling issues.
