Aftermath of a winter storm in the Andes

Post by AmBraCol »

Here between the Canal and the Equator our winters are a bit different from those further north in the hemisphere, but they exist none the less! And last night we had a good one. I got up this morning to let the dogs have their morning sniff in the park across from the house and found the place flooded. The pups didn't mind. Afterwards I went back out to record some of the effects of the winter precipitation. I've been experimenting with in-camera settings for monochrome, but include one full color as well.

Here's an example. I loaded them up to take them out to the gun club with me. Biscuit was looking happily over my shoulder and Blackie was sitting back as relaxed as she ever gets in the car (which isn't saying much, she loves to ride but sits stiffly the whole way). As soon as I got my cell phone up to catch the picture - Biscuit dodge away and blocked Blackie in the process... <sigh>

Thanks! do you know Blackie's breed? His face resembles Ranger's . . .

Shepherd Rottie cross . . .

I miss using my old 35 mm SLR camera, although I don't miss the cost of film developing (never develped my own).

The 'phone' cameras seem sort of soul-less, but.....they work really well, and take photos with less effort that are usually better than I'd have manged with my film-camera. Plus essentially no cost to 'develop' or store them.

Shepherd Rottie cross . . .
We picked up Biscuit 9 years ago, she's about 3/4 generic "pitbull" and 1/4 English bulldog - and 100% sweetest mutt you could ask for. But she didn't do good on her own and would serenade the neighbors when we had to leave the house without her. So my I told my wife "We need to get her a little sister." and had a plan to get some little yap mutt as HER dog - because she was always telling me, "We have this bid dog because of YOU". But she beat me to the vet and put her on the alert for some small breed rescue dog.

So the vet comes up with this ugly little potbellied skin problem bundle of dubious canine starter pack and told us "Her mom weighed 7 pounds, she'll be a little one." Our big mistake was worming her immediately which reduced her body weight by about 1/3 when the parasites were ejected. That meant she could make use of the food herself, and make use of it she did. She's slightly taller than Biscuit now, not bad for a cross bred "7 pound mutt bred to a shadow of the night". From the markings and size I like to think she's got some Doberman or Rottweiler in her somewhere - but that's just conjecture based on markings. Incidentally there are a number of dogs in our neighborhood with similar markings and size - but from a wide range of backgrounds/sources. So her markings are relatively common place in this area. It would be interesting to know what breeds went to make up the mongrel we call Blackie, but I'm not too concerned about it.

On a side note, she has canine autism. I used to joke about her being autistic due to some of her mannerisms and such - and then found out it IS a thing. We've got to watch her around new dogs as she doesn't take social cues very well. Like last night we were in the park and a new pup showed up. Never saw it before, but it sure didn't pay attention to the owner's "commands". And the owner had a handful of other dogs on leashes, don't know why this one was loose. He came over and Blackie was ready to give him a good castigation, but I made her "sit and LOOK at the puppy". After she sat and looked a while something clicked and she was ready to play - but only a bit. Folks look askance at Biscuit, but it's the black dog that gives me fits. Even when Biscuit was bitten behind the ear by a pitbull bitch (unprovoked attack - by a repeat offender) she stood down when I told her to. Anyway, that's more than you asked for, but I'm sitting here waiting for a repairman to show up so got carried away.

Thanks for the story . . . dog talk is always good talk, and some ways better than car talk or horse talk. neither one of those can come in and curl up by the recliner and talk us into doing stuff. but the dogs fit right in with gun stuff, like they were designed even before range bags :)

when daughter rescued Ranger he was smaller than his current head size with a huge belly distended by worms and stubby little legs that couldn't lift very far, but he persevered thru all that. german shepherd rottweiler cross is a thing now, and there are lots of photos of them with that search phrase.

I like Ranger a lot, but he is running out of rear diff and we don't know how much time he has. He has quit chasing the squirrels and rabbits, and can't spin anymore. I hate it when this happens. And i can't see getting another 70 pound dog. Am actually thinking "no more", but then i think about Dachshunds and Chihuahuas, i've known some good ones, but would have to be a non-shedder. But I don't know if we could live without a dog to boss us around.

i'm thinking Jim might have a picture of a horse curled up beside a recliner . . .
