OT - A question for you Texians...

Post by Ysabel Kid »

A very off topic question at that.

I was traveling this week and a group of young men wearing cowboy hats and jeans came onto the plane. Not a big deal; I've seen men traveling like this frequently. When the plane arrived they exited and I saw them in the terminal - and all three were wearing tennis shoes!

Isn't this a faux pas? Did I miss an update and cowboy hats and tennis shoes are now permissible?

So, you are judging what another man wears?

Be careful about that. They used to have a TV show like that.

I’m mostly wearing African Ranger style boots on the ranch these days. Does that make me less of a cowboy in any way?

Cowboy boots are good if you're riding a horse - the smooth soles and tips come right out of a stirrup if need be.

But for walking and doing chores, they stink.

Now they do make 'cowboy boots with tread-soles', but then I'd argue they aren't "cowboy" boots in that case, as they could get you in trouble on a horse.

This wiseom is coming from someone whose catalogued a whopping life total of hours-on-a-horse of somewhere around eight or ten....

Boots are a hassle to take off and put on. If you're wearing boots you WILL be asked to take them off by TSA. The likely had boots in their luggage.

Not a Texan, but was some 70+ years ago... the boots with treads we call barn boots, don't know why. but they make a superb hideout. i've carried the xd9 in the airspace, sans holster. i don't walk far in them that way, but it makes the pea-shooter very accessible in the vehicles. derringers need a holster to manage them. they are my preferred riding boot on the motos. when sandals just aren't quite right. which mainly is when my feet are getting sunburned and blistered...

as far as "goes with" is concerned, hey it's the Sixty's, right?

I suspect that going through TSA is the main reason for this.

I do love a good pair of cowboy boots. But thee days I would rather wear something with a bigger toe box and that laces up.

Grew up on a ranch Arizona. C'boy hat pretty constant. Tennys unless going horseback. Never thought of the culture clash. Dad wore "clodhoppers" if he wasn't riding. Boots that work well in a saddle are not great for walking.

For working cattle on foot, I prefer a rugged logger type boot with a steel shank and steel toe.

ATVs don’t require the same type of boot that’s needed for a horse.

TSA would be my guess. Last time I flew, I wore some slip on boots strictly to get through security quickly.

Me? Never. If me wife didn't pick out my outfits I'd probably look like a clown!

Actually, I prefer jeans and either a flannel shirt or Wrangler shirt depending on the temperature. 5.11 short-sleeved shirts during the summer.

The actual reason why I asked was that, like others, I find cowboy boots uncomfortable for lots of walking or standing on concrete. Heck, nothing feels comfortable for me to stand a long time on concrete. My back just doesn't do well doing that.

So, now I know I can wear my hat on occasion with comfortable footwear. Doing the happy dance!

And no, I don't actually care what anyone thinks of what I wear... except SWMBO!

Agreed.

I see more and more "men" wearing PJ bottoms with tube socks and crocs. Especially when traveling. I just shake my head and realize I am way out of date... and wouldn't have it any other way!

Heard a joke one time about a Eastern walking into a bar and approaching a feller standing at the bar and asking... "Is that your horse outside?" The man replies, "yes". I see by you Ten Gallon hat, chaps, gloves that you might be a Cowboy. But I have to wonder why you're wearing tennis shoes and not boots?" "Well, Sir, I wouldn't want to be mistaken for a truck driver!"

I wore cowboy boots on a flight to Europe years ago and it was miserable when the feet swell after enough hours. I won't do that again.
