Skeeter remembered

Post by Bill in Oregon »

We got talked into being extras on a movie set in Deming, NM, yesterday evening, and to kill some time in the afternoon, we visited the Deming/Luna/Mimbres museum. It's surprisingly large, with excellent collections of the distinctive and beautifully crafted Mimbres pottery along with pioneer artifacts, ranching displays and a huge collection of rocks and minerals, specializing in geodes and "thunder eggs." And then I wandered up to a display case dedicated to none other than Skeeter Skelton. Still not quite sure why it is in Deming unless he spent a lot of time on the border just south of there -- Columbus and environs -- but there were portraits, a brief bio, copies of his books and his Border Patrol uniform jacket and badge. Quite a surprise!

I am always blessed to find folks that remember people that meant something to me.

Skeeter lived only a few miles west of Deming. His wife was involved in a sewing club there.

Skeeter's place was more south of town than west, used to drive by his old place (Sally still lived there) on the way to a buddies that was even further south. The backyard backstop was long gone or I would've stopped and asked if I could mine it for some souvenir bullets. Sally worked at the elementary school in Deming for many years and had a bunch of peacocks that wandered in the road at her house. Matter of fact, we referred to her as the Peacock Lady until we finally realized who she was.

Appropriate timing on this thread, as I was just out shooting my OM Flattop 44 this morning.
