A heat wave here today compared to yesterday where it was -8° at 7am. Today it's a blistering +8°! A whopping 16° swing. :D

It never made it to 12° yesterday so it was a bit nippy, however, this is Colorado and this weekend they're forecasting sunny and in the mid to high 60s.

The 13th of Feb. we got our first snow of the year, along with crazy high winds of 30-60 mph! It was blowing every direction but straight down so the snow left places dry of snow, and other places drifted up deep. Went to bed and next morning got up to more snow that fell overnight, but without wind it was covering everything. Not extremely deep at maybe 4"-5" but enough to shut down everything on Friday the 14th.
Stores and restaurants were crying the blues because Valentine's Day was a big loss for both! Sat. it warmed up to 39 and snow began melting. Sun. it got to 45 and almost all the snow was gone! We headed to the store for some groceries and as we got to the checkout they had dozen bouquets of roses marked down from $30 to $5.99! I asked my wife if she wanted some and she was happy to get one at the huge discount! Saved me a bunch on dinner and flowers this year!
And now we're in a tropical mode with 40-41 at night, and mid 50's daytime this week! But winter isn't over here as we've always gotten our deepest snow in February and March. So we'll see how the rest of winter fares.

Drove by today ,that framing is done and their they are setting roof trusses on top of the walls 25' high. 20* and blowing like crazy. What Cold!

We broke a record last night temperature wise, feels like temps got down to -20. We also had a first for us: our pipes froze! I put a heater under the house and it finally thawed out around 1pm. I realized that you really don't need one of those big forced air heaters, until you do. I'll be picking one up as soon as the stores get them back in stock.

Oh, the chickens still won't come out of the coop because of the snow on the ground. Luckily we start warming up from here.

It's warmed up dramatically all the way up to the mid 20s which is snow weather.

Looks like we got a touch of snow last night. Right at 13".

One of the benefits of living in Colorado is the deep blue skies. With low humidity, the blue in the sky shows through and as I live at 6,100 asl, there is less atmosphere between us and outer space causing the blue sky to be a deeper blue than at sea level. If you doubt it, next time you're on an airplane look up out the window. The sky is a much deeper blue than at sea level.

However, with advantages there are always counterbalancing disadvantages as well.
I go to the CGCA show in Denver, Co. Springs, and now Greeley every year, and it can be a dicey drive in mid May some years! On several occasions the highways were closed, and alternative routes that were open were just as snowy! One trip about 5-6 years ago they closed the highway near Rawlings, Wy. just as we approached that exit! We had to make a 8 hour detour up through Casper, Wy. and the show was closed for setup by the time we got there that night. Had to setup quickly the next morning and still had some snow around Denver.
It's always something we fear about the trip in May, but fortunately it's been only a few times we got shut down, but also sometimes when it was sketchy traveling the Rockies in May. Hope things are warm and dry this May!

Here in Colorado the conventional wisdom is that you don't plant flowers until after Mother's Day (2nd Sunday in May) as the likelihood of a freeze and snow is still high then. March and April, when the rest of the US is celebrating the start of Spring, are actually our two snowiest months here.

I've had a wild week the past several days... I left TX on Sat the 15th with moderate temps. I arrived in central Minnesota on Sunday nite. Monday morning as they unloaded my wagon, the thermometer in my left mirror read -20ºF. I then drove down to southern MN and picked up a preloaded trailer headed to Galveston, TX.
Temp had risen to -14º... and stayed that way or a bit lower until I reached central MO where temps hovered around 0º. Roads were great until I got south of Des Moines, IA, then the snow started. Got down to Joplin, MO on Tuesday, and got new windshield wipers, ones that clear bugs all summer & fall are poor performers when the snow flies. Got back on the freeway, temp was 4º, got 3 miles & the freeway was clogged up due to idiots playing bumper cars & trucks. Took US and state routes over into OK and saw a little back country. Roads were not cleared. I firmly believe that the OK DOT believes that what God brings, God can take away. Snow covered roads are fine to drive on, as long as there isn't ice under it. Probably less then 3-4 inches deep. Got back on a major US highway headed south and road was fairly clear and temps were up to around 14º. I stopped for a few minutes in Savanna, OK and must have had a brake freeze, along with an airline. No air, means no brakes, no suspension & travel. Made it 4 miles before alarms were set off and I sat on the shoulder of the road, waiting for a mechanic. He got me temporarily fixed until the next morning and I could get the rest done. Waited 5 hours for tire service guys to replace the two tires where the brake drum froze to the shoes. Yep, take my word for it, tires that don't rotate don't survive long. Finally got my airline thawed about 6 pm Wednesday, just in time to get to Galveston on Thursday am. Got there and overnite temp was around 24º, and found another drum had frozen on the drive down. This trailer has a computer controlled anti-skid system and the freezing temps, moisture fouled it up. It must have thawed out yesterday in the above freezing temps and seems to be working ok today. I'm currently just south of Dallas getting unload after picking up a load yesterday in Houston. I'm headed home for a week to thaw out!

Hard to believe that the weather service is predicting 70º temps beginning Monday! But... I'm a gluten for punishment, for next Friday, I'm headed back to MN!

Griff, [ ] question coming,

would it do any good to squirt antifreeze onto the shoes at night, if that's even possible? Or is there such a thing as a wheel heater? And driers in the air lines?

I know it's probably good for laughs in the RA, but might be cheaper than the alternative . . .

curiously,

curiously,
Good questions... I suppose one could give the anti-freeze a try... Wheel heaters(?). Can't say as I've ever heard of such. If I had found them frozen as I got rolling, I'd usually just beat on the drum to knock the shoes loose. Usually takes a coupla good whacks with a hammer and they release. I usually turn slightly in both directions as I leave a place where I suspect I may have frozen drums to view whether my trailer tires are actually rolling, which I did in this case. And yes, all newer vehicles are required to have air dryers. And, I have purge valves on all four of my air tanks, but at those temps, any moisture in the tanks is frozen and won't purge, either at the tank or dryer. I suspect while they worked on my air dryer the cold air condensed in the the small ¼" line that acts as a signal line from the dryer to the governor on the air compressor to disconnect the compressor as design air pressure is present.

Thanks Griff, I am a student of the "don't force it, get a bigger hammer" school of welding, I understand that. If I operated my boats in those temperatures icing up and rolling over and sinking were the WX challenges I tried to avoid . .

thanks again,
