Although the story of the 14 year old is encouraging, teens with guns have become a huge problem in the greater Albuquerque area. It seems like every day there are incidents involving shootings and teens. They come out at night, they're absolutely fearless and they have no concept whatsoever of their future. The juvenile laws in NM are shockingly lax and the teens know it, indicating when they're arrested that they'll be out in a short time regardless of the severity of their crimes.
An example was publicized a few weeks ago. A 17 year old had been found guilty of murdering 3 people and spent exactly 5 months in juvenile detention. Weeks ago at age 21 he was apparently pounding on doors at an apartment complex, he was approached by police, pulled a gun and severely wounded a police sergeant and was killed in the ensuing firefight.
Yesterday a man approached three teens huddling in the parking lot of a grocery store looking like they were up to no good. They had on masks and when the man asked if they planned on holding up the store, he was shot in the face as he was attempting to drive away,
For several years teens have been walking into Walgreens stores carrying empty bags, going to the liquor departments, filling the bags and walking out without paying. In some cases they have pulled guns on their way out the door, warning employees to stay back. In a couple of occasions they have fired shots back toward the stores. Walgreens has a policy by which they don't even report thefts of this kind to police.
NM is unfortunately a very liberal state and the legislature, which is currently in session, keeps going back to trying to analyze what is causing this shocking trend. The truth is that criminal teens are getting no more that a slap to the wrist and what's worse is that they are learning while in jail or detention how to be even more successful in their endeavors and how to avoid or resist the police. They are well on their way to becoming career criminals. That crime doesn't pay these days is a myth.

I am so glad that young man prevailed and the evil-doers met their just ends, but he is going to need a lot of counseling to have anything like a normal life in years to come.
Having just taken the NM concealed carry class yet again, the instructor mentioned the usual warnings of what happens post-shooting: you will very likely be arrested; you may be blamed for the violence; your life will be forever altered, etc.

I think that right there is the big problem - We get the behavior we reward - put 'single moms' on welfare and you get more of them. Let criminals out of jail instead of keeping them locked up, and you get more of them. Daddy Government becomes the baby-daddy and takes care of Mom, and Momma Government becomes the 'mom' providing room-and-board for drug-dealing baby-daddy in between 'jobs'...
Hopefully the new changes resulting from the last election may improve things.
Fingers crossed...

It's a shame what the boy gonna have to deal with mentally, plus all the possibilities that could go against him like you mentioned, you just never know! All brought on by those thief's. He's probably brought up like most here, if n when in that situation when it happens, dont hesitate, don't miss, because that could get you killed! I'd be willing to bet, they knew exactly what they were after, and thought no one home!
I'm hate it for the young man, but he did exactly what needed be done, glad he ok and free!!! Life goes on from there, I pray for his better!
