Winchester 1892 feedramp
I have been, lately, toying with my winchester 1892 in 45 colt. This is a miroku rifle and I have hit a rather frustrating snag. The barrel has this tiny little feedramp that is more of a "tab" than a ramp. It interferes with feeding any longer profile projectiles, I have tried everything from 230-300 grains and it is incredibly finicky about the profile. An XTP will chamber fine but a slightly longer hard cast, gas checked bullet will catch on the lIttle tab. All these loadings feed in my Henry and my sons Rossi 92. Has anyone else noticed this on the winchesters or is this a defect? I will a picture when my wife gets home, I have an arm in a sling and am not allowed to lift anything heavier than a coffee cup.

My Rossi 357 has a tiny feed ramp cut into chamber. Interestingly NO Winchester original had this.

Re: Winchester 1892 feedramp
Pretty common for Rossi to go overboard with that feed ramp unfortunately. Here's a thread I started with a bit of info about a buddy's rifle with that issue and what they eventually did - https://castboolits.gunloads.com/showth ... ice-Report

Re: Winchester 1892 feedramp
I wonder if I can file it off and then polish it all up? It seems to be rather pointless since it is barely 1/8" wide

Re: Winchester 1892 feedramp
So your saying it's a protrusion of the chamber?
The Rossi is just a scallop in the chamber itself

Ok I though you meant it stuck out past chamber . That little tab is just the remaining metal of the barrel shank after the ejector cut has been made same as the large cal Winchester original

It really seems to interfere with feeding

Not sure why as when the carrier is in upper position on the original 1892 Winchester it's above that lip. My guess the larger 45 Colt . As you can see in this 44 WCF 1892 barrel. There is no feed ramp scallop. Both 38 and 44 were same way and when carrier is up all the way it creates a straight line into chamber.

From the 1914 catalog notice the carrier straight line to chamber. My guess the larger 45 Colt has changed the approach angle.

I wish I could test removing it without wrecking my barrel

Those two cuts where to clear the large caliber 1892 ejector nose . That's why it looks that way . Bullets should not be hitting that low. Maybe the carrier is bent not coming up high enough ?

Ok,
So, you can ramp the chamber mouth some. But no more than the fillet inside the 45lc case. If you take anymore that that the brass won't be supported.
However, the ramp may not be the problem. The original Winchester 92's were designed to work with bottleneck ammo in the 1.5" to 1.6" OAL with round nose flat point bullets. Ammo like 44-40, 38-40, 32-20 and 25-20.
Bottlenecks always feed better than straight wall ammo, whether it is a rifle cal or a pistol cal. That's because you have a small diameter bullet going into a really big hole by comparison, the bottleneck chamber being much like a funnel.
This is something Rossi figured out many years ago. What they did is increase the angle of the rims slots, so the back end comes up sooner. The Maruko 92's are more like the original. Slower bringing the rims up to line up.
One thing that may help is to make sure the cart guides are no more than .005" wider that your average cartridge width.
