OT- Found an Old Friend
Looking thru some of my Dad's old things that were boxed and secured before my move here, and before fumigation of house, I found my Dad's old Army issue Case knife. This knife was issued to him back in early '42 and he carried it throughout the Pacific Theatre fighting thru New Guinea, the Philippines, and beyond. The end cap of handle had fallen off years ago and my dad repaired it using Marine-Tex epoxy to create a new cap while preserving the leather washer handle. He also sewed a new leather sheath several years ago after the original rotted to oblivion. The blade still looks great and was razor sharp, the way my Dad kept all his knives. Today I got some nylon twine and made into a "Turk's-Head" knot-work to cap the handle, something Dad taught me years ago, and I think he would have liked. I super-glued it on then rubbed the white nylon to give it a worn look to match the rest of knife and sheath before coating with clear plastic. It's coming on my next hunt whenever that will be. I wish this knife could talk, the tales it could tell i'm sure. Thanks Dad I'll take good care of your Case Knife that never let you down all those years.

Griff, come on now, you were store keeping all those years and didn't spend some time tieing knots? BG.

That is a wonderful find. Coming across something that belonged to your dad and has all that history that he experienced, can really make a person's day.

Nope, other duties unrelated to rating were foremost in my skipper's instructions. Luckily, most involved shooting and blowing things up. Being constructive wasn't big on his priority list for me.rjohns94 wrote:Griff, come on now, you were store keeping all those years and didn't spend some time tieing knots? BG.

Mine is configured more in the Bowie style, on the hilt it has USN Mk 2, the up side of the hilt is lined out with a chisel ( I think ) it says
KA-BAR under the chisel? marks.

I could never do the Turk's head just right. That is a very cool keepsake. You are indeed a wealthy man.
