Northern Florida axis doe hunt

Post by t.r. »

Scores of axis deer escaped from the Brady Ranch a few years ago and have established a growing population in the wild. I hired a guide to put me on a young doe for meat. It took several hours of quietly travelling through the thick forest to find them. My shot was taken at about 85 yards with my 30-30 carbine. The animal was struck through the chest organs and quickly expired. I'll butcher the meat myself as I was taught over 50 years ago by my Grandad. TR

For those interested in details:

Winchester 94 angle-eject Legacy carbine with 20 inch barrel. 1:12 twist. Built in 1995
Leupold scope featuring 2-7X settings. Mine set at 4X
Winchester 150 grain Power Point factory ammo. The expanded bullet went all the way through the chest wall(s).

Great harvest, t.r.! I've heard repeatedly that axis venison is about the finest there is.

Congrats on a beautiful deer, and I've heard also they're good eating, I wish some would get started here! Most all the deer species are beautiful in their own right, but I believe the Axis may very well carry the flag, but perfect rifle, hunt, and pic, those Win Pp's have taken more game for me than any other I'm fairly certain by memory!

Congrats.

I hunted deer one season while stationed at Eglin AFB. Honestly, that doesn't look any smaller than most of the ones I saw. The terrain in northern Florida isn't conducive to large critters. I watched one buck bolt through the tree line at the far end of a "meadow", really a mud bog. I went across and there was no way it could fit through the gaps in those skinny trees but it did. I did get to thinking that every now and then one of those guys has to hook an antler and ring their bell.

I’ve had whitetail , mulie , fallow and sika but as of yet no axis . But I vividly remmember John Wooters writing that he thought Blackbuck , Axis and Nilgai were the three most palatable exotics . Now I’m rather partial to sika but I’d like to try some axis .

Nice shooting! I like 150s and bet they''re a pleasure in a scoped pistol grip carbine.
