How's the Weather in Your Neck of the Woods?

Post by COSteve »

This morning it's a might nippy here in our small valley at -6° with well over 6" of snow on the ground with more snow forecast for tonight. I'm not complaining as I like the snow but it's a tad cool to be out and about today. Monday and Tuesday night it's forecast to be even lower.

On the other side of CO and 2 degrees this morning, calling for minus 2 tonight. No snow, looks like it was mainly a Front Range event, like a lot of the recent snows. Mountains down South are doing OK though, as well as the Aspen/Crested Butte area. We need snow here. Pretty dry.

Today... I'm in Lake Park, GA and it's currently 65ºF with decreasing cloud cover, dropping to a low of 26ºF tonite and expected high tomorrow of 44ºF. Pretty balmy stuff. I'm not jealous of neither your snow nor cold temps! It's nice not having to run this big diesel for either heat or A/C.

SW Missouri....Cold and windy. 15 degrees, with the wind chill it's -1. Not gonna get above freezing until Thursday. Our chickens are gathered up by the house to stay out of the wind.

Was 21 overnight at the Las Cruces airport, with a wind chill of around 12. Bright sun this morning but a cruel breeze. We had upper 50s yesterday but with winds in the 30s and 40s bringing up a dust storm from Mexico.

Getting colder by hour, has snowed 3-4" since daylight, still snowing some till after dark, but getting into single digits tonight, and looked like same next 3 days, in SE Ky. Been a tougher usual Jan here.i ain't got out much, hopefully Feb starts changing early? If so, I'm laying down, slow but steady boot leather, with a Mid 94 30-30 Carbine in my hands. Did same last year, Feb-May, but with a Longbow in hand. I walked so much last year I kept hurting my knee, then twisted it bad in May! Took a while recover, but I ain't going that far this year, man gotta learn his limitations! Should get few shots at yotes I hope in March n April. Young turkey sounds is best predator call I've found! Yeah, this weather got me dreaming! Mostly, deer scouting all the way!
I just finished loading some 30-30 150gr SPFN Hawks with mid-load of 3031, W748, n Varget to try in that Carbine. I've never really give a lotta testing, but am this year! I bought that rifle, idk, 3 years ago, the cleanest best looking Mod 94 I've ever seen, it made in early 64. But I believe it made mostly with old parts. But only reason I jumped on it was to give to my granddaughter when she's grown. Only way I'd spend $750 on a Mod 94! It's turned out a favorite jewel, I'd like to take at least one deer with it before?

Zero degrees Fahrenheit predicted tonight here, but I remember 31 years ago when the temperature here in central Indiana was 36 Below 0 F, so until that memory wears off, I'm hard to worry, as long as I've got some firewood, and the heat-lamp is on in the pumphouse. It was 31 years ago tonight, I believe, that I looked out and saw the thermometer at 'negative 34' and thought is must be broken, so turned on the radio, only to find out that the 'real' temperature was 36 below. Wind chill wasn't much colder (-42 I think) because it wasn't very windy and humidity was sort of zero.

Typical morning marine layer overcast. Sun just breaking through. Temp in high 60's. Time for a jacket.

No rain in sight. But that's both good, after fires and bad, we need rain & more snow.

Thinking about wandering down to the beach to watch the sunset later.

Weatherman is forcasting a high today of only 8° with a low tonight of -11°. That's a bit nippy for my tastes.

Weatherman missed the mark as the high in our back yard only got to 3.4° yesterday, however, today they're forecasting a blistering 22°, tomorrow 29° and by Thursday 46°. That's the great thing about living in the mountains, the weather changes often and sometimes dramatically.

For instance, in 'spring' of 1981 we were in the backyard of our new home laying out the vegetable garden. It was a beautiful 73° when the wind picked up and the temps started tp drop. Next thing we knew the temp read 21°, a 52° drop in just 20 minutes. We looked at each other and said, "Welcome to Colorado!"

Weather here has turned cold compared to where we were in December and early January, but still mild compared to most of the US. We're mid 20's at night and mid 40's during the day. But the skies have been the most gorgeous clear blue you could ever hope for!

One of the benefits of living in Colorado is the deep blue skies. With low humidity, the blue in the sky shows through and as I live at 6,100 asl, there is less atmosphere between us and outer space causing the blue sky to be a deeper blue than at sea level. If you doubt it, next time you're on an airplane look up out the window. The sky is a much deeper blue than at sea level.

However, with advantages there are always counterbalancing disadvantages as well.

At this altitude the atmospheric pressure is lower than at sea level. If the standard pressure at sea level in 14.70 psi, the pressure at 6,100ft where I live is actually only 11.87 psi so when you fill your tires using that old standby mechanical pressure gauge on your air compressor, you're actually filling them low by 3 psi as the gauge is calibrated to sea level pressure.

So, if your tire pressure should be 35 psi cold, you actually need to fill it to 38 psi cold on your gauge to have the correct pressure inside your tire. Those of us that have a computer controlled vehicle that reads out the tire pressure in each tire will note that the gauge on the air supply might read 35 psi but the vehicle's computer will read only 32 psi.

cold as hell -- was 4 degrees when i woke up this morning . I know a lot of you folks have it worse than that , but its routine to be wearing a flannel and jeans throughout winter without need for much else here -- having to break out actual cold weather gear is harsh

I'm sitting here in the office with the window open and the fan on, listening to the birds in the park across the street and wishing it would rain as we've been having to drag the hose out a few times a week to keep the flowers in front of the house going. With an over night low of 16* and a high of around 24* it's not been a bad winter here between the Canal and the Equator. Oh. Of course those would be Centigrade or Celsius temps.

It's been the coldest with number of snows here ever since just a few days after Christmas that we've had in number of years. Past week we've had several mornings near 0, and highs in teens-low 20's. But it's showing a big change coming mid next week, 50's even maybe near 60, lows mostly in 30s maybe 40*+! I'm sure ready for it, put down little boot leather in woods! I got to see the first dry, powdery, blowing snow of my lifetime, on Tuesday, here in SE Texas. I have seen wet, messy snow plenty enough times. This was a nice change.

I do not particularly care for temperatures that get low enough to kill-back our native shrubs/plants, but, being native, they will recover, after looking dead and ugly for a while. I reckon that we will be feeding the bees, some time within the next few days, as it warms up, in the daytime.

Well, it's snowing again here in our valley. We're at 19° and about 4" of snow so far. It forecast to snow throughout the day and end tonight. It's been cold all week with the highs not reaching 30° and the lows in the single digits. Hopefully, they're right and this coming week it will get into the 40s.

Don't get me wrong, I happen to like the snow. My wife and I are definitely 4 seasons type of people and in the winter it's supposed to snow so let it snow. Even before I retired I didn't mind getting out in it or just sitting by the fire and enjoying our time together. :o

My only concern is when driving I'm especially aware of the dummies who don't know how to drive in bad weather. I just keep away from as many as I can so I have ample time to react should someone screw up.

Mid 20's today and yesterday another round of snow. I figure we got a little over 6". Tomorrow they say we'll get back to highs in the mid 40's which is normal for this time of year. Sure is pretty outside today with all the powdery snow glistening in the sunshine. Snow on the pine trees in clumps and everything so peaceful. It looks almost too good to be real.
