450-110 Wild Cat
Does anyone know a good smith that can convert a new Winchester 1886 from 45-70 to a 50-110 necked down to .458? Like a 450 Alaskan but with a 2.4" case instead of the normal 2.1" case.
From reading on here, a fellow by the name of David R Clay used to do this conversion but I can't find any info about him or the conversion.

Looking for another 200fps? My shoulder hurts just thinking about that cartridge.
One of the reasons I like that the 450 Alaskan is shorter is that it can use bullets in the 458 Win Mag category. Longer ogive with the cannelure farther down the shank.
In your new wildcat, you're going to have to settle on a narrower range of bullets. However, with the uptick in popularity of the 45-70 in the 1990's and early 2000's ... you should be able to find that you need.
It's hard to get that wide end (45cal) to swing into place inside of a 2.88" OAL limit. Most of my loads are under 2.80"

Yes, I am looking for more powder capacity to push light (short) bullets even faster.

Winchester developed several versions of their experimental 46 WCF which only made it to prototype stage. One version used the full length 50/110 case necked down to 458.

The long neck would be handy for containing lube grooves of heavy weight cast bullets.

I already tried Turnbull. They won't do a 458 wild cat.Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2025 11:06 am Here's a .50-475-110 wildcat.![]()

I don't want a long neck. I'm after case capacity. And I will be well over cast velocities.JFE wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2025 3:39 pm Winchester developed several versions of their experimental 46 WCF which only made it to prototype stage. One version used the full length 50/110 case necked down to 458.

Do you have a stash of 50-110 brass? That stuff seems to be hard to come by lately.
I'm interested in what you come up with for lighter bullets. I'm going to try to work up loads for the Lehigh 302 grain Xtreme Penetrator .458" bullet as well as the CuttingEdge Maximus .458" 260 grain bullet.

I don't have any experience with them, but I hear tell Wyoming Armory does 50 Conversions, so they might be a place to look.
Best get on the Starline backorder for 50-110 brass.
