Winchester 30-30 Does It Again

Post by Rube Burrows »

Went on a hunt with my two sons this week and yesterday my 11 year old dropped the hammer on a nice 8 point buck. This is his second buck (last year he got a 7 point) and he also got himself a doe year before last.

On this particular hunt he was with my oldest son ground hunting while I was sitting in a stand with one of his friends who wants to get more into hunting.

Right before last shooting light this nice buck walked out about 100 yards in an oak bottom that was just about straight down. He was walking briskly on his way somewhere and there was limited space to shoot. My oldest son blew a grunt call in hopes he would stop. As soon as he heard it he stopped in his tracks and stuck his head way up in the air. He was stopped between two trees with about a foot between the trees from 100 yards. My 11 year old son Nathan did not hesitate. He leveled the Winchester 94 (which has become his favorite deer rifle) pulled back the hammer and fired. The deer was fatally hit. He ran a little further into the oak bottom and then circled back and fell.

It took us 1.5 hours to pull this buck up the hill which like to killed us both.

I think you can tell how happy he is.

Nice! Two things that are hard to beat. A 94 carbine and hunting with family.

My guess is your son will have that rack on the wall when he is 80, and the memory will be as fresh as if it were yesterday. 8)

Way cool! 8)

I remember one of my first deer, probably 30 years ago like it was yesterday. Shot through the shoulder (Winchester 95 SRC in .30-06), angling down and out the opposite side. Took me a while with my then father in law when he spotted it out in the middle of a large creek.
He just looked at me and smiled. Took me hours to get that sucker out of the water and up the trail to where we could load it onto the trailer he'd build for his tractor.
Old Stan was in his mid seventies then and long since gone now, but that man taught me an awful lot about hunting. Glad I paid attention.

Your boys will have some great memories of that day!

Thanks everyone. Me and my sons really enjoy hunting. Both have been hunting and shooting since a young age and I am proud of the people they are. These are the memory makers that I would not trade anything for.

My first three whitetails were all taken with my grandpa's old 30-30 that he gave me a couple years before he passed away. Light, handy, up to the power needed for the task. Those are indeed fine memories y'all have made!
