New Rossi 92 sight options

Post by nralover »

Can anyone recommend me an improved sight for a new Rossi 92 carbine. 49 year old eyes don't hold up, LOL.

How is the replacement process? Fairly straightforward?

I have one too and love it, however, there is one caution when installing it. The collar that has the slight notch in it to accept the pin that will hold it in usually doesn't have the notch exactly right to make it tight so the sight won't wobble.

The solution is simple; just turn the notch 90° from the pin hole, take the pin and put it in the hole and then tap it just enough to make a mark on the collar. Then take the collar out and put a tiny grove in the collar at the mark so when you drive in the pin to fix it in place it binds the collar tight to the top of the receiver.

Then just install the sight and you're golden. Another advantage of the peep sight on the rear of the receiver is that it increases the sight radius giving you the ability to aim more precisely. My 20" 92 carbine now has a 21" sight radius up from 16" with the stock sights. In addition, I use a small aperture to give me the max Depth of Field advantage so that both the front sight and target are in full focus even though I wear blended lens and am 77 yrs old.

I think a much more practical option is a receiver mounted aperture sight. I first added a Williams to my '92 Rossi .44 Magnum-

Then later switched to an all-steel Redfield-

I also added a Patridge front sight and regulated it so when the rear sight is bottomed out, my .44 Magnum hunting load is sighted in. That way I can jack the rear sight up when shooting lighter cast bullet loads.

The reason I like the safety replacement sight is that it is a lot like the sight on the Deluxe model of the Winchester Model 71, on the bolt. And as said, it gets rid of the crappy safety.

I agree generally with an adjustable rear sight, however, on my .357 mag Rossi carbine I've found that a fixed aperture rear sight does just fine with the performance of my handloads and the 0 - 250 yds I feel is it's effective range. Had I a .44 mag, I might have another opinion.

BTW, I have a Skinner peep sight that's not readily adjustable on my Mossberg 464 in 30-30 and have found that it also works just fine within the range limitations I use it at.

I had williams peep on a 357 rossi 24" octagonal barrel. Sold that gun a while ago and might put one on the 44mag.

The first post said improved... but not necessarily a peep sight. The ones I've shot, the sights were hard to see, weirdly shaped, and the elevator interfered with sighting through the notch when on it's lower settings making the notch very shallow.

Marble Arms https://www.marblearms.com/rear-sights.html sights might fit the bill if you want to keep with a barrel mounted rear.
