That is a tragic and unnecessary way to lose a life, prayers for everyone connected to this tragedy.

Re: Know whats beyond your target
.
That's one reason I actually kind of like the places in the midwest that have rules allowing 'straight walled pistol cartridges' for whitetail, since the short fat bullets do a nice job on deer out to reasonable midwestern ranges of 150 yards or so, but fall out of the sky rapidly after that. WAY too many hunters and plinkers seem oblivious to the concept that if they miss the bullet KEEPS GOING. In fact, the folks dumb enough to be using military surplus ball ammo in a 30-06 or 308 may find the bullet will go a long way even after it passes through tissue, depending on where they hit the deer.
Normally I'm not a fan of laws, and think the tort system suffices (and it usually does) - but the odds of being caught and punished are probably slim for such accidents.
Then of course in Indiana even when it was only 'straight-walled pistol cartridges', there'd be dudes out with their 7mm Remington semi-autos blasting away at deer silhouetted on a hilltop...
