I don't know what you guys call them hats but I've had to buy a Blaze orange ball cap for around here, as there are more than a couple of rifles being used all year round in these woods, we don't have to wear blaze orange by law but it makes sense if like me you are off the trail looking for Squirrels

I've always had a wool crusher. Certainly not the best, but they are serviceable.
My dad has one of those Canadian Tilley hats. It's a nice hat, but I've been kind of looking at Outback oilskin hats. May pick one of those up. I usually wear a ball cap, but I'll have to start keeping the sun off me more. I want a little more brim than my old crusher. And something that sheds water a little better.

:D Enough about hats let's look at pocket knives, you can never own too many so for Christmas I have
bought myself a French Tickler from Rough Ryder, illegal to carry in the UK but I don't care about that

I've got a ton of knives. I always have a folder on me. Sometimes I carry a small fixed blade in a kydex sheath too.
Right now, I have a Kershaw Cryo assisted opening folder on me. Ive had it several years and really like the knife. Not as thrilled with the steel. It's ok, but doesn't take as razor an edge as I'd like. I also have a Gerber paracord knife in a custom kydex sheath slid in a pocket of my lunchbox (I'm at work). Also in there is a knockoff US military WW2 pocket knife and a Leatherman original.
Guess I hadn't really thought about how much I have with me. Maybe I AM the kook people say I am. :D

Good stuff.
Probably my "nicest" knife is this 1st production run Bark River Fox River in Elmax. It's sitting with some project EDC fixed blades. A Buck Pak-Lite skinner and a caper. Both with kydex sheaths from Extreme Edge custom kydex. The bigger one is a Gerber Freeman in a sheath from the same source.
The other pic is a couple from my childhood. My Boy Scout knife and a Buck 102 Woodsman my dad bought me a lifetime ago. The Buck still sees use every hunting season. I bought one for each of my sons when they were young also.

I think I've shown you guys this one before, but it's quite special.
My grandfather's Remington field knife that he carried when he was a warden. It served many duties for him as a warden, hunter, and trapper. He spent a lot of time in the field for extended periods, and his equipment was heavily relied upon. This is the only picture I have while I'm at work. I do have the sheath also. It is pictured with his compass that is inscribed inside with his name and February 1942. It was a gift from my grandmother.
They are accompanied by my 2nd generation Colt SAA.
Gramp was a Colt, High Standard, and Winchester man.

Found another pic with the sheath, compass, and his beloved High Standard model B.
This pistol has shot more game than I will ever see. Including big bucks. During the war, it was the only easy available ammunition. He saved his rifle and centerfire pistol cartridges as much as he could.

Great photos with even greater history behind them Jay 8) I wish your grandfather had written a book as it would have been a very interesting read.

Being denied the freedom to carry a firearm I have a small selection of boot knives just in case I should ever venture into the unknown.

Illegal in Cali.

But here are 3 Cold Steel knives that are widely useful, the bottom of which is much more useful than you might expect. It is excellent for slicing roasts.

Even with constitutional carry, I can say that I carry a knife more than a handgun. I ALWAYS have had at least one knife on me since I was about 8 or so.
Here are a few more I had handy pics of.....
With the Colt Scout convertible and New Frontier is a nice Marbles skinner that my friend with the gunshop gifted me many years ago. I've always like this one. Also in the pic is a 2 bladed Imperial with metal scales. I was in 5th grade, and walking home from school one cold winter afternoon. We took a shortcut every day that led past the ball field and up over a steep sand bank at the end of the dead end street where my friend and my grandparents lived. It was a narrow and packed footpath from kid traffic. I was plodding up the trail on the sand bank when I kicked this Imperial up out of the snow. To a 10 year old kid in Maine, I'd just hit the lottery! I cleaned it up, put an edge on it, and carried it for many years.
Pictured with my trusty Commander is a Kershaw Skyline. This is a fantastic carry knife. Weighs practically nothing, has a good blade shape, and has a flipper. I bought one for my youngest son when he turned 18. I liked it so much, I immediately got one for myself.
With my old P&R Model 66 Smith is a Kershaw Brawler. This is an assisted opening knife, and while not the least bit refined, it sure is dependable. I carried this for a long time and it saw a lot of hard use. It took it all in stride. Impressive for such a cheap knife.

Nice find when you were in 5th grade I bet some kid was #issed for losing it .
The one thing that you can depend on with a decent knife is it's always loaded :D
I like the look of that Marbles skinner, I have a couple of Marbles knives.
A couple of Sodbusters the little one is an Imperial.

I like that little one!
Speaking of found..... and little Imperials.....
This little 2 blade I also found. When my parents bought their house, maybe a year or so later, I found this laying on the heating element inside one of the baseboard radiators. Probably around 1974.
We got back up to camp and cut some more wood today. Man, was it warm. Like in the 40s. I even ran the old Stihl some! I kept the Husky on the tractor for felling and limbing, but used the old Stihl in the dooryard to buck up the wood. Been a while since I've run that old puppy!

I have one of those little Swiss Army knives on my keyring it has a tiny red flashlight which is only good for really close up use. My son bought me a flashlight that is about the same size as the knife and throws a very useful light they are both on my keyring all the time.
Went to a local gun shop yesterday to look at .243 rifles, my son's boss wants him to get one for the Roe deer on the estate, we also looked at 20 gauge O/U shotguns the prices seem a bit more expensive up here than down South. :(

I have a couple of the tiny Buck pocket knives, but I have to confess......
Of all the knives I've had, never owned a Swiss Army of any kind. I suppose I should pick one up sometime.
I was looking at some new Kershaws the other day. I really don't need another knife.

The Farmer X Alox is my favourite for off the trail times, the Alox versions of the Swiss Army knives are made to military specs with thicker blades etc.

Yeah, that one looks pretty good, GK.
I really should pick one up sometime.
Today, I ordered a receiver with a pintle plate. I'm going to mount an ATV winch on it and plug it into the top tube on my log skidder on the tractor. This will allow me to winch the logs up to the tractor like a skidder does. I'm going to put a plug on the wires so it can be quickly disconnected if I remove the attachment from the 3 point hitch on the tractor. Then I won't have to try and get the tractor to where I fell the tree.
I snapped this picture of my dad hitching a tree to yard out from the tractor seat. You can see a flat square at the top of the skidder upright. This is just a plastic cap. Once removed, I can insert a receiver hitch and just need to drill the pin hole. This is where the winch will be mounted.

Woo! That tractor is a lot bigger than mine! With that, you could use a Fransgard winch. I've seen them small enough to fit my tractor, but for the little wood I cut, it's not worth the hassle. And cost! :D

Sounds like a good time, Walt.

It's cold and windy here too. It was 5 degrees with a slight wind this morning. It managed to climb to 15 degrees today but the wind picked up so it feels worse than this morning. Supposed to be around 0 in the morning.
The good news is, it will be froze up enough so I can cut more wood this week anyway. :D

Haha yeah frozen ground is basically concrete.

Back about 15 years ago, we had a dog pass away. The kids were all home back then and wanted him brought home and buried out back in our little pet cemetery. That wasn't a problem, except it was January. I was out there well after dark with a pick axe getting below the frost line. It was about 2.5 feet at that time as I recall.
I never cared for that dog, but by the time I got him in that hole, I was sure sorry he died. :D

Not a story about cold but about dog burials. In this part of the country out in the boondocks, ya gotta bury them deep because the coyotes will dig down and pull them out of the ground. After my daughter's little Chihuahua died, I buried it in a plastic bag, then poured a quart of used motor oil down the hole before I finished covering it up. The coyotes never messed with it.

The moral of the story is.....
If you gotta go, it's better to go well lubricated!

My wife's ex-boss had to bury a horse that had belonged to his daughter. He wound up burying a couple times cause the frost kept pushing it back up. His daughter would come in the house and say, "Dad, buttons is back again."

How'd the heck did we get on this topic? :D
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.
