How many .357's is enough?

Post by Streetstar »

I had a T/C muzzleloading setup with a spare centerfire rifle barrel or two for sale on a local forum for 6 months and thought i was priced attractively (never really took to the T/C's like i thought i would - i like them in theory, but having to break my sight picture for every shot to reload i didnt like ) - but "Trump Slump" is very real in the gun world unless you have something truly unique or collectible - or maybe commodity type things like stock Glocks, etc that always sell if priced attractively --

Anyway -- had a trade offer and normally people hit me up with offers of miscellaneous SKS's or Mosins, or homebuilt AR's and generic Wonder 9's - and , not that there's anything wrong with that but just not my thing.

Guy said he was thinning his handgun herd and although i didnt expect much, i was pleasantly surprised. Due to what the gentleman had i even kicked 200 bucks in to make the arrangement more equitable. The guy actually said "After all, how many .357's does a guy need anyway"

I told him that is a trick question and the answer is usually - "Just one more"

Anyway

First up is fixed sight 'Smith 65-1 - its in very nice shape and appears to have been a safe queen - no box but came with some original literature --- this may be the prize of the lot, i dont know

Then a Security Six snub with a nice pancake holster and 6 speed loaders -- i'm guessing the 2 3/4" barrel model is a little bit more hard to come by than the 4"'ers i usually see , but it really piqued my curiosity

LAstly - and the one i am looking forward to shooting the most right now - as i recently came across an A2 Colt Sporter - this rounds out my Desert Storm era martial collection pretty nicely, and came with 12 mags , which i guessed were probably worth about $20 each on their own - The infamous and controversial Beretta 92FS - has a bit of holster wear - I already had the Bianchi holster and used to carry my Glock in it when afield. This oversized behemoth should be a smooth shooter

The 2 .357's join the Blackhawk i already posted up and this 3" 686 + 7 shooter i stumbled across a couple of months ago . I've fired this one already, but neglected to take any pics - some days are just so much fun, hassling with phones or cameras is just a bother --- but i suppose, - at least for this season anyway - the correct number of .357's to have is indeed - Just one more

Image

its a nice day here tomorrow, so i hope to get out and burn some powder so i can compare, contrast and basically just have fun. The small grip panels and the T-Grip on that 65 do not look like much fun with full tilt boogie 357's but we'll see i suppose

"Just one more" was the correct answer indeed. :)

Nice!
I had a Model 65 that I gave to the first ex. Should have kept the six shooter and traded off the ex sooner. I have a 2 1/2" 66 and Speed Six with the same barrel length. Only other .357s I have are an older Interarms / Rossi 92 and a Marlin 94. Pretty much covers that cartridge for me. Not that there's anything wrong with that. :D I'm more of a .44/.45 guy.

I had to look up the dates for Smith 65-1 revolvers. Holy cow - The darn things date from '71 -'73 ish. Its as old as i am. I would have thought from condition it would have been late 80's or 90's Apparently its owners through the years ascribed to the theory that revolvers need to be shot a couple of times a decade whether they need it or not.

Hoping to change this one's fate as my other fixed sight 4" .357, a Colt Lawman - is my favorite and its going in for service as its the second time in 20 years i've shot it loose. ITs slightly out of time now and the trigger reset is slow. But anyone familiar with Colt MK 3 actions would know that it takes a fairly decent amount of rounds downrange to need a heavy service

What kind of finish does that S&W 65 have? It doesn’t look like standard stainless steel from the pictures. I seem to remember black chrome being a thing some time ago.

For me the answer is 5... a S&W 65-4, 2 Rossi 92s, a Colt SAA and a EMF Jager SA clone.

Nice additions there. Never have owned a 357, but have shot a lot of it through other folks' pistols. I keep looking for a Dan Wesson like the first 357 I ever shot. I was amazed by that 6" sixgun. It was the first time I'd ever reached out past 100 yards to touch something with a handgun launched projectile. Never have managed to corral one though. The Ruger Six series is another itch I've never managed to scratch. So that's "two more" instead of "one more". 8) Also need to talk my brother-in-law out of his OM Blackhawk. He loans it to me any time I ask, but it'd be better if I never had to give it back.

Must be the lighting

It’s pretty standard stainless in person, - but a black chrome finish would look very nice now that I think about it

A 3” model to boot! A very sought after configuration I’m told

357 is the perfect revolver/ levergun combo. I wish I could find and afford one of those pedersoli 357 pump rifles

I'm more a fan of larger bore revolvers although I admit that .357s are somewhat more economical to shoot considering powder charges and cost of bullet casting lead. Regardless, I do have three Smiths, a couple of Ruger single actions, a Ruger double action and a couple of lever actions in .357. My normal load is the Lyman 358156 cast bullet fueled by 13.5 gr of 2400.
