Japan needs bear hunters
I knew they had some issues, but had no idea it had gotten so dire.

Not much different here in NJ although I think people here are smart enough to avoid bears. Although we don't build paper walls either!
You just don't think of bears being an animal in Japan, at least I didn't until now.

Re: Japan needs bear hunters
after being stationed in Kodiak, ALASKA, for 5 1/2 years, those brownies can be a real problem. Up there unlike Japan, just about everyone has a gun against bears. the first time I was up there from 1975 - 1978 the most popular pistol was a 44 mag.
The next time I went up there, the most popular pistol was the 454 casull.
As I understand the 454 is almost 3 times more powerful than the 44 mag.
A good comparison is the 30-30 has a bigger bullet and more energy than a 44 mag.
And believe me no one considers the 30-30 adequate for a big brownie

bigger how? it's longer, BUT the bullet weights of the 44 mag begin about where the 30-30 bullet weights end. A standard 240Gr 44 mag has stopped three charging grizzlies that i know of. I hunted deer with a 310 Gr 44 mag load, and i now carry a 405 Gr 44 around bears.oldebear1950 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 03, 2024 11:55 pm after being stationed in Kodiak, ALASKA, for 5 1/2 years, those brownies can be a real problem. 30-30 does seem a little little to me, but in the hands of a rifleman with fully trained eye-hand muscle-memory there won't be any wasted shots. I used to think a CNS shot was the only way to stop them, but then a nephew up and dropped one that was coming after him with a heart shot from his 44 revolver. I'd guess that the spine was involved somehow, but haven't heard that yet, so IDK.

Re: Japan needs bear hunters
When my son and I were on our trip to Japan last September, we went up north to Oirase Gorge near the top of the main island and stopped in a small town near Aomori with a large lake and hotel. Our guide told us that the town was known for having bear problems and it was hurting for visitors because the bears were starting to overrun the area.

Big surprise. Restrict hunting, and make hunters the bad guys. Then encourage protecting the predator, and surprise you've got a bear problem. Geez, who'd a thunk that might happen?

That's their problem. They are smart and highly educated so they're susceptible to being flattered with a BS story and tricked into believing it. Then, they take it as gospel and refuse to question it because they believe that if they believe in it and they're smart, it must be true.marlinman93 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2024 6:14 pm Big surprise. My son is a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics and works at the National Lab in Boulder, CO with hundreds of other PhDs in physics. In my opinion, they are some of the most gullible people on earth and once exposed to a BS story that sounds plausible, they're all in with it. That's why I think that the 'academics' bought in to the Left's BS without questioning the premise.

I just read the article, and it was eye opening - and frustrating. It seems that the Western World isn't the only place afflicted with clueless and inept bureaucracy.
If you search You Tube for Japanese hiker bear attack there are some interesting results, including a decent sized brown bear attacking a truck.

Here is a very interesting way to hunt wild boar in Japan. Pretty ingenious, if incredibly complicated.

I'm with you on this... About the bear "problem", i recommend that the Japanese eat them, and have market hunters controlling the populations... because, those foodie people eat everything else, and a market demand will correct the overpopulation problems.

Re: Japan needs bear hunters
GRIZZ, look at the muzzle energy of the 44 mag, the lowly 30-30 has more enegy at 100 yards than the 44 mag does at the muzzle.
the 454 casull is about three times more muzzle energy than the 44 mag.
A carbine in 454 can be loaded to equal factory 45-70 loads, and no 44 mag can match that.
When I was in Alaska, I had one RUGER # 3, 2 RUGER # 1s, and a MARLIN lever in 45-70. The Rugers could almost equal a 458 mag, and the Alaskan FISH AND GAME DEPT
recommended two guns for bears. The Marlin lever in 45-70 and a 12 guage with slugs.

Re: Japan needs bear hunters
old bear, look at the statistics of how many bears have been killed with the 44. i know of 3 at least. what you are suggesting is that you think that the energy number is all that counts. what counts more than anything is where the bullet goes. i know all the specs you cite, but nothing you cite has any influence on where the bullet goes. and this forum is full of hunters who have literally made with tons of meat with energy numbers you poo poo. it's ok, i don't mind, i have (4) 45/70s and i load them with 525 grain piledrivers.oldebear1950 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 3:35 pm GRIZZ, look at the muzzle energy of the 44 mag, the lowly 30-30 has more enegy at 100 yards than the 44 mag does at the muzzle.

there is a world famous Alaska guide who carries a 9mm auto for bear defense, and has killed at least 1 rampaging bear with it.
I know the sister of a woman who was cook on a survey crew during the early pipeline days. a bear came after her into her tent, and she killed it with a 22 lr single shot. it's about where the bullet goes, and no calculator can give you that information.
.
BTW, with regard to the 30-30 as a bear stopper,
. .
thanks for the post, i enjoy hearing from you
