went to the range, question about cases
Went to the range on Tuesday. Beautiful day and had a nice time shooting. The range wasn't busy, usually just one other guy, and I think I overlapped with three fellas total while I was there. I mostly just checked the sights/scope on several rifles that haven't been checked in a couple few years. I don't get to shoot as much as I'd like so this was the first time in a while that I'd shot much at all. My shoulder is still tender.
packing up to go to the range reminded me that I didn't have near enough gun cases so I ended up wrapping three in throw blankets. So, when I got home I ordered several new soft cases. I had gotten a bulldog pitbull case a few years ago, I liked it so I checked their website and ordered five more. They had free shipping for over $75 and they arrived today! The price was really good I thought at only $22/each, so if anyone is looking for a decent but inexpensive soft case, check them out. They have thicker foam than some other soft cases I've seen and have nice large sturdy zippers and canvas exteriors.
anyways, I got to thinking, how many cases, either soft or hard do you guys keep on hand? just enough to haul the max number of guns you are likely to transport at any given time, or do you keep one for each of your guns, just in "case"....?

Re: went to the range, question about cases
If I'm bringing scoped rifles I usually put them in reinforced hard cases to protect the scopes. When I bring lever actions or other rifles with iron sights I just use cheap soft cases. I shoot handguns more than anything else and I have a hard case that holds four revolvers or pistols. Anything more than that and the subsequent gun cleaning becomes a chore.

Re: went to the range, question about cases
Glad you got to make it to the range. Sounds like a peaceful time.
I normally try to keep 1 case per gun. I don't have a huge collection of guns though, 6 currently, not counting the pellet rifle and bb gun.
I have an American Mountain Supply case for my Winchester 94 30-30. They have since sold to someone else and do not offer the cases that they did. When I purchased mine, you could specify length and get a case to fit your gun. The quality is very high. I wish I'd bought several more for other guns.
My 870 fits perfectly in a $10 Allen from Walmart.
I have a couple rifle sleeves, which I really like. They don't protect guns as well, but they have an old timey feel, which I like.

Re: went to the range, question about cases
Ive got about 20 assorted soft cases around here and 4 good hard cases long enough for a trapdoor or longrifle. Have a few pistol rugs and 3 briefcase style hard cases for handguns. I leave a couple gun socks in the truck just in case something follows me home. Most have been acquired on the cheap at swap meets or shows but the extra long cases I have ordered or made.

Re: went to the range, question about cases
I have quite a few soft cases, a few hard cases. My oldest case is a roughout leather case, with shearling lining and a quality metal zipper. I bought it in 1978 when I bought my Rem 700 in &Remmag. It weren't cheap then, and frankly, I've never encountered another soft case as well built. I have one Pelican hard case for my target AR, but the one I set up for P-dog hunting, is in a soft-case. The other soft cases I have are a variety of Allen (the newer of these seem to be of lesser quality than my older ones). I have several soft cases that I've bought in the past 5 years for my trips to the range and matches that are better than any of the Allen cases... I just can't remember the name of the company... order 'em direct,

.
I am fortunate enough to live in a rural area so I don't have to go to a range, which means I just take the garden cart and put an old wool blanket in it and then start laying guns down. If there are more than enough to cover the first layer I fold the blanket over and make another layer or two. It's one of those large wheel garden carts made out of plywood so we can easily all a dozen or so long guns and handguns several hundred yards back to where the shooting range is.
The downside of such a situation is that I don't go to a shooting range so I don't get to network with other gun owners other than on this website. One of the problems with gun owners politically is that many of us are sort of isolationist and self-sufficient types, in contrast to the urban wackos who are so anti-gun, who seem to thrive on networking and screwing with everybody else. Gun orders mostly just want to be left alone to peacefully enjoy their hobby.
I do have a set of four different sizes of gun cases so I can take a couple when we do travel someplace in the car.

Re: went to the range, question about cases
I use a gun case almost every time I go shooting, and I am blessed to live on 18 acres. I normally drive my Tracker back to the spot I shoot. The case is not only a protectant in a vehicle, it provides a place to lay the firearm if I am shooting from next to the truck.

Re: went to the range, question about cases
I’ve gotten to where I only take two or at most three guns with me to the range.(with the exception of my carry gun) so I rotate through gun cases as needed. Some very special guns get their own case and I write on the outside with a sharpie.
I only use one hard case and it only has one gun in it. It’s for my SBR Q Mini Fix and suppressor.
I keep a couple of zipper cases for handguns under the back seat of my truck and a slip or two just in case, but they are empty until I need them.

All you have to do is pack up and MOVE 30 years of accumulated "stuff" -- and you'll end up with one for each!
That's when pawn and second-hand shops help out, as you can usually get cases in decent shape for $5 or $10 each.

Re: went to the range, question about cases
The case I have here I got for $5 at a pawn shop I don't know exactly, but I think it's from the 1980s. It's an Allen, and one of my favorite cases.
