What rifle and load(s) will you use this hunting season?
I'll be useing my 30-30 Marlin carbine for small game and deer. My 223 Ultra H&R for Varmints(30/30) and my T/C 54 cal Renagade for muzzle loading season.
The 30-30 will be loaded with 9.5 of Unique or 25gr of Varget Under the lyman 173 GC 311041 bullet cast from WW
The T/C will have a 430gr maxi and 90gr of pyrodex.
The 223 will shoot a 55gr FMJ and 24gr of Varget.
Hobie are you going to use your 1895 30/40?

Loads for hunting season
I will be using my 1876 in 45-75 for rifle season. I am using Buffalo arms smokeless ammo since I'm not set up to reload this cartridge yet.
On my side, I will be using my Gary Reeder .44 mag SBH with Garrett ammo.
During blackpowder season, my .54 Cal, Brad Emig built Virginia Rifle. I use 110gr of FF pushing a speer round ball.
For small game, my 1897 Marlin in .22 or my stevens model 15, with my Talor .38 single action on my hip.

Honestly, I'm not even close to figureing that one out yet.
I believe I'll bring my BLR or 1895 45/70 as a backup/bad weather gun but my primary gun will be an older Marlin lever gun. Its a toss up right now between a "55" 336 in 30/30, a model 36 in 30/30, an 1893 32/40 or a 1893 38/55. I want to use the 38/55 pretty bad but its tough to commit.

I have two antelope tags left (both doess), two deer (1 doe one buck) and 2 elk (one either sex one cow). My plans as of now are to hunt the antelope with a bolt rifle in 25-06, the doe deer with a Winchester 71, the cow elk with a 1895 Browning in 30-40 krag, not sure on the other tags yet. But who knows, what ever jumps out of the safe that day may go for a walk in the woods. All of these levers are open sites.

My guns for this years' hunt...
Well, my Krag project is sort of on the back burner (after tallying up the costs of a new stock, a Redfield peep--if I can find one--and a swivel-less carbine barrel band, I was gonna be laying out around three hundred bucks, not counting dies and brass.).
So I'm using my Mauser .270 with my Rossi .45 and Vaquero as backup.
Mauser is a 98, engraved receiver, butterknife bolt handle, Bold trigger, full Mannlicher stock (Fajen black and grey laminate) with a Redfield peep/Marbles ivory bead front. I'm putting a Weaver side mount on it so i don't have to mar the engraving. For a scope I'm either pulling my Weaver K4 off of my Ruger .22 or (more likely) slapping a BSA 1.5-4.5 that I have kicking around the parts box. For a cheap scope I was really impressed. I had this on my 10/22 before getting the Weaver, and it preformed flawlesly.
My pet load is 50.5 gr of H4350 and a 150-gr Nosler Partition although the same powder under a 150-gr Ballistic Tip shot well enough last year--three shots inside a 3" orange paster at 100 yards (with just the Redfield peep).

For the local whitetail season I'll be using a SBH Hunter 45 Colt w/ Grizzly Cartridge 300gr Cast. Sighted dead on at 100 yards w/ 2.5X scope.
For the hog hunt and other hogs I'm using the same 45 Colt load as above in a 94AE.
Taking the 1886 to Africa w/ Grizzly Cartridge 405 gr Kodiak bullet@ 2120 fps. Also taking an OM Ruger 77, 7mm Rem Mag w/ 160g NP @ 3000 fps.
The Wild West Guns/ Marlin 50AK is going to Africa as a loaner gun.
There are a couple of trips to "shotgun" only destinations where I will take the custom 870 and shoot Federal TruBall Low Recoil. Also the CVA Kodiak 50 Cal with 270gr Powerbelts over 3 Triple 7 pellets.

I am. I don't believe I'll have the 1876 ready to rumble.WCF3030 wrote:Hobie are you going to use your 1895 30/40?

I have a Pacific peep that mounts by way of replacing the cutoff plunger. I thought I'd sold it, but... not soooo sure now.CaptainFinn wrote:Well, my Krag project is sort of on the back burner (after tallying up the costs of a new stock, a Redfield peep--if I can find one.

Did you post on that? It shoots so high in my 1876 SRC I didn't want to commit to using it for deer.rjohns94 wrote:I will be using my 1876 in 45-75 for rifle season. I am using Buffalo arms smokeless ammo since I'm not set up to reload this cartridge yet.

I have so many deer rifles I could kill one with each of them and not repeat for 5 years. I don't have the opportunities 6pt0sitka has. By the way, did Craig migrate with the rest of us.
I've not seen him on this site yet and I've not seen him around cast boolits as well.
Are you shooting factory or reloads in that 30/40?
Well, I'll start with my 62# longbow loaded with 600 grain Douglas Fir Arrows tipped with Black Diamond Delta 2Blades. Oh, you probably are asking about guns. Illinois won't let me hunt deer with any rifle other than a muzzleloader, so I'll use my .54cal TC Renegade fitted with a Green Mountain round ball barrel and or a original Ruger Blackhawk .44mag flattop. Small game will see one of my model 39s.

#1: my Win 94 30-30 "Woods Rifle" with the RCBS 30-180-F @ 195 grs RTL @ ~1900 fps with Varget. I've never made meat with this rifle, so it gets first kill until I do. Peep sights on this one.
#2: my 357 mag 20" Rossi with the 180 gr group buy FP @ 190 grs RTL @~1750 fps with Lil'Gun. I'd use this rifle first, especially since I missed ol' Mossy Horns with it two years ago, but over the last 25 years or so it's made bunches of meat in the form of hogs. No deer, just hogs and water moccasins. When the Woods Rifle makes meat, this will be my go-to rifle. Peep sights on this one, too.
#3: my butchered $69 Mosin-Nagant M44 Russian 7.62x54R "Rain Rifle" will be my wet weather go-to rifle. Load is the 220 gr Hornady RN .308" bullet pushed by surplus 4895 to 1960 fps. It'll keep those too-small bullets 5 in 3" @ 50 yards with a 1x red dot sight.
#4: if I want to sit on a pipeline, i.e., if i don't feel like walking/stalking, it's my butchered $63 1938 Turk Mauser 8x57 with the Rem 185 gr jacketed @ 2300 fps with surplus 4895. It's topped with a Wal-Mart $30 3x9 scope. It'll put 3 of those cheap Remington bullets in 1" @ 100 yards all day long.
#4: my Traditions "Buckskinner" traditional style, of course, with peep sights, of course, with the 320 Lee REAL bullet at 1400 fps with 90 grs Pyrodex.
I'd headed camping in about a week and a half. I'll stay through the first week-long muzzleloader season through two weeks into regular rifle season. I'm taking four rifles:
1. A marlin M60 22 rf for small game for the pot.
2. The Traditions muzzleloader.
3. The Woods Rifle 30-30.
4. The Rain Rifle 7.62x54R Russian.
Ol' Mossy Horns ain't got a chance. . . .

I started out as a shotgun only hunter. When I was old enough I became a handgun only hunter, and laughed at rifle hunters. "How can you NOT get a deer with a rifle?" Now that rifles are legal for me, I have a lifetime worth of rifle collection to put into action. Hunting for me now isn't as much about getting game, as it is in an chance to use some of my guns. For that reason I end up bringing a LOT of guns hunting. My interests of the last few years has turned to old guns and black powder cartridges. It's rather funny, now that I am finally legal to hunt with a rifle, I hunt with rifles are about the same as the slug guns I started out with in terms of ballistics and accuracy. They are a heck of a lot more fun though.
I'm going light this year. Only 4-5 rifles and 3 pistols.

Slow is just slow.
MM93...that is a slick .44-77. Keep us posted on the results.
For me, I will be using one of 3 rifles this season.
#1 1886 in 40-82 with a 265gr Leadheads GC bullet at 1489 fps.
#2 1895 in 38-72 with a 265gr Beartooth GC bullet at 1693 fps.
#3 1873 in 38-40 (special order 30" bbl) with a Speer Gold Dot at 1305 fps.
The day determines the rifle...or two...or three....

Huntin' season's all but over out here in CA.
Seems like you can't hunt in this area unless it's over 80º, and certainly NOT during the rut.

From best weather to worst . And top to bottom in the pic.
Marlin 1936 .32 Special Factory loads
Marlin 336 from 1951 .35 Rem 200 gn RN over 4895
Marlin 1894 in .44 mag , factory loads
If I'm still hunting when the leaves are gone , another good weather rifle may make it out.
Win 88 in .308 from 1956 using 165 gn sp over 4320.
Can't resit pics so ,

Same as always: Winchester 64A in .30-30, 29.5gr of IMR3031 behind a Hornady 170grFN.
I've never been left wanting for more, so I just go with it.
Of course, for muzzleloadign season, it's a TC black diamond in .50cal, 90gr of Pyrodex behind a 240gr JHP saboted Hornady. THAT round knocks them over.
Also, I'll be bringing my Ruger BH in .357mag out for every hunt in case I get a chance for a close shot or a coyote.
-Or a poacher who draws on me.
(Not likely, but hey, yo never know when some dude is going to be in your treestand, even on pvt property. Nice to be armed, anyway.)

Mod 94BB356 with 200 gr Hornady. Still trying a few different powders. Mod 94 circa 1942 170 gr sierra over 3031. A traditions inline with 385 gr Hornady Great Plains over 100 gr Pyrodox. Maybe an old Mossberg 12 ga bolt with slugs if nasty weather and I poking around wet dirty swamps.

I'm leaning towards my Win 94 44 mag. Be an interesting challenge as I'm hunting on bald prairie this year for mule deer buck and doe. My son is going to hunting the same WMU for mule deer buck as well with a Win 94 30/30.
Gotta admit though, my 270 WSM is sighted in just in case lol.

Live to hunt and fish, your life depends upon it!
I first need to blood my 1886 EL. 45-70 450 grain LBT WFM GC 42 grains Reloder 7
Then a couple of 94 30/30s with 170 cast over 29.5 grains of 3031
I might take my Win 670 30-06 out this year.
Old Ironsights sold me a Mossberg 500 muzzleloader setup for my Western Field 550 that I will take out muzzleloader season and try. I have not shot it yet, but probably something like 90 grains of Pyrodex and a Barnes Sabot.

I should have bought one in Feburary when I had the chance.
I agree you should have grabbed it because mine is not available. SORRY. I had been searching for awhile and one day I walked into one of my local haunts and low and behold there it was. Mine has a real good trigger and a good barrel. My handloads feature WW brass, CCI 210 M primers, Varget powder and Hornady 250gr S.P. bullets #3520. Real accurate and real fast for follow up shots if needed. Check the various auction sites, they do occasionally show up. I paid $450.00 for mine w/ a set of dies. I think Rem. did a run acouple of years ago for Grice's. They are out there, just not many guys giving them up. This speaks volumes about the gun/cartridge combo. Good luck w/your search. You could find a .270 or 30-06 and do a rebarrel. Just a thought. 1886.WCF3030 wrote:Seeing as how its my topic and I'd love to have a 35 Whelen in a Rem pump, I'll let you post your reply.1886 wrote:Great topic. Deer: .357 Rossi and 4 5/8" OM Blackhawk in same caliber. If I ever get the chance to work up loads, using 358429 Lyman. Otherwise it will be Hornady 180 gr. XTP seated to rear crimp groove and over 16.5 gr. of H-110.
Hogs - and maybe additional deer: Ruger 96/44 and Ruger 4 5/8" Super Blackhawk with 300 gr. cast over 20.0 gr. of H-110. However, if I instead decide to use my 4 1/2" Ruger Redhawk, I will be shooting that 300 gr. cast over 7.5 gr. Unique. I don't care much for that feel of the recoil in the Redhawk with the H-110 load.

We are determined that before the sun sets on this terrible struggle, our flag will be recognized throughout the world as a symbol of freedom on the one hand, of overwhelming power on the other.

I will be taking my #4 Mk1 loaded with 180gr Sierra gamekings @ about 2450fps.
For thick brushy areas it will be my 94 trapper in .45colt with Cor-Bon 300gr.
Both should do the job nicely.

It is getting to be that time again, in fact just had a youth hunt this past weekend. Of course I do post date the requirements by a couple-four decades. That being said, plans are for Deer here in Wisconsin yet this year, Black Bear just ended and did not see one until a nice bruin walked across the logging trail in front of me after the season ended. I have multiple bow tags, two choice tags (I can get more for my section) rifle, and unlimited Herd Control tags ($2 a piece)
Deer Rifle season: Most likely my .444 Timber Carbine (240 grain Speer JSP @ 47grains of H4198) for still hunting and my .444 Black Shadow w/1.75 X 4 Dusk and Dawn scope for posting, my .44 Mag '94 Trapper (240 gr Speer JSP @ 23.5 grains of H110) for walk'n about. If I get one early in the rifle season, I'll then get out either my '86 .45-70 (405gr LFN @ 29 grains of H4198) or just one of the .30-30's (170gr Hdy JFN @ 31 grains of H4895). If the weather is inclimate, I'll be drag'n out either my .44Mag '94 Black Shadow or one of my M38 Mosin-Nagants (180gr .311 Spire Point @ 36.5 grains of H4895)
Blackpowder Deer: Most likely my Lyman Great Plains Hunter spitting out a Lee REAL bullet in front of 90grains of FFg or a 1861 Springfield loaded with 80 grains of FFg behind a 535gr Minie Ball.
Elk (Montana): Original 1873 Springfield Trapdoor, 405gr HollowBase(Lee 405-HB) sized .460, stuffed over 70 grains of FFg and a .030 Veggie wad.
Next spring, Brown Bear in Alaska, have not made up my mind yet but probably my M71 .348, or '95 .405, or 1895M .450, or back to my .444's
