High Cavalry Draw holster

Post by Arminius »

Hi!

I really like the high Cavalry draw.

Where can I buy a High Cavalry, Right hand draw holster, of course for the SAA / clones, w 4 3/4" bbl? Meaning it should sit on my right hip, butt forward.

I would like it to be in the style of a "Duke" Rig.

I would rather have a special rig, than order a "left hand cross" draw rig. Wanting it to sit higher, and more upright, on belt.

Thanks in advance, Hermann

I have had a couple holsters made by Plumb Creek Leather. He is out of NE and has a FaceBook Page. Not cheap but not expensive either, he does 1st quality work!

A.k.a. the "cavalry twist holster". :D I got fairly good in my youth drawing an open-topped version of that with a Colt 1860 Army reproduction. I don't think I've ever seen one for a shorter barrel though. If you get one, post a picture of it. I'm sure I am not the only one who would appreciate it. :D

Good luck!

Intentional or not... that made me snort my soda out my nose to save my keyboard! :P :P

To the OP, check out El Paso Saddlery's 1860 holster under their "Military" section.

For sure, El Paso make some great holsters -- as I have two! -- but there's also a seller of Civil War reenactor gear on eBay that sells the same style holster, with and without the U.S. marking, and the quality is quite good at a much lower price. I'd bought one for my 1860 Army.

Any straight hanging left-hand holster should work for a right-hand twist draw.

I did this for quite a few years when left handed holsters were harder to find. This is another draw that the unknowledgeable poo poo as being unsafe because you have to "paint" others when you draw. Done properly, the only thing the muzzle sweeps is the ground and your target.

As a left handed kid growing up in the sticks I had an old .36 cap and ball 1858 Remigton knock off that came with a straight hang right handed flap holster. My grandad and I cut the flap off, water soaked it to mold it to the gun for a tighter fit then added a hammer thong. I wore that strong side, butt forward for several years and accounted for a lot of farm raiding critters with it through my teens. Always found it to be a very comfortable way to carry a sixgun.

Rocking K Saddlery made a me a couple of dedicated left cavalry holsters about 8-10 years ago. No idea if he is still around.

Straight hanging I am not sure.

But I would definitely want less angle than the Cavalry Holsters pictured.

Was there an Infantry holster with a different angle?

Thanks to all, Hermann
