Embedded within this link Click HERE is an amazing 3D Scan of Sir Earnest Shackleton's ship the "Endurance", made by digitally stitching over 25,000 images together. Pretty amazing details can be seen -- considering she rests 3,000 meters deep in the Weddell Sea.
Amazing (I used that word again!) technology!

Not sure about the best captain. He did get his ship caught in the ice.

That was part of the plan. He was going to ride in the ice pack. But it went the wrong direction or wrong rotation, IIRC. Not totally predictable. He was to exit at a certain spot, but that didn't happen because of where the ice wound up.
My remark about the sea captain involves his ability to keep his men together, keep them working as a team, keep tending the data base of time, location, wx, temperature, etc. They were active and well fed on penguins, the men trusted him, and all survived because they did. He had a navigator who kept the log and track of the drift and the small boat trip to their campsite, and made land fall where they had to. Really remarkable.

I think it’s a remarkable story — and A&E once did a 2-part mini-series on it that was excellent — really well done!
