the most interesting thing to me is the apparently rarely fired savage 99.

That's pretty neat, thank you for sharing. I've always looked under my butt plate of any gun I acquire. I heard of the long ago practice of putting useful items in the butt of the gun, mostly cartridges. I've never found anything.

I've heard about this practice and I have a Lefever 20 ga. Nitro special double my Dad gave to me around 1962 and which I hunted with all thru my younger years. A couple years ago I took the buttplate off and inserted a typed history of the gun and a couple early photos of me with game I had bagged with it; like the only time I ever limited out on Grouse (partridge) and the time I doubled on an incoming flight of wood ducks. I like to think someone 'down the road' will get a kick out of its background and make it a little special in their eyes!

That's really neat, thanks for sharing. Heck I'd like to hear the stories myself.

That's awesome. How old was the dime?

I don’t remember the date on the dime. I think it was in there to serve as a screw driver.

I am refinishing a shotgun stock at the moment so I'll make sure I put something in the stock when I replace the butt plate.

When it was common practice for a person to carry a card for introductions I’ve found a couple under the buttplate of shotguns I’ve acquired over the years .

Part of installing thie Williams Receiver Sight on my Mod64 was drilling a hole in the butt for an extra aperture. I tested a lot both the standard size (.095?) And the smallest target. But I find best for me was the target ap drilled one size bigger, a medium size I guess. But I have the standard size in the butt for a backup. I can shoot just fair without one, the ghost ring, but I much prefer my medium aperture for hunting! Ive always got a good pocketknife with a screw driver tip on hand, this Old Timer has becomea recentfavorite! But usuallya Case Trapper too!!!

I've got few others, memorabilia under em, mostly 22's. But I've been meaning to do my 336 same way, but with the folding sight & lifter. I list each in the deer woods in early 80's, last time I deer hunted a lotta years! Then about 10 years ago, same thing a few months ahead season luckily, so had time to replace and get ready.

I think the guy with the 99 Savage did wrong by making a display for the note he found. Eventually that will be lost or tossed. He should have put it all back and then add a note of his own. Just my 2 cents worth of thoughts on that. I did find a 1946 penny under the stock of a 1914 manufactured 1906 Winchester once. When I sold the gun I made sure the penny was still there. Also Dads JC Higgins 22 I shot a lot in my youth recently became mine after dad died. I pulled the buttplate off and there was a 1975 dated Youngstown Vindicator with about 10 22 LR wrapped in it and some waxed wood matches! I put it there back in the day and 100% completely forgot about it!
