Finally Went to the Range!

Post by COSteve »

What with the fire danger and red flag warnings closing the range, Sunday was the first time I'd been out there is a long time. I'd planned to do some chrono work on 11 firearms and 21 different loads / bullet weight / bullet types for them in early summer but couldn't because the the heat and/or high winds and then the red flag warnings. I got the results I expected for the loads with no surprises and then had some fun plinking and making more empty brass to reload.

Steve, you are a more disciplined shooter than I am, Having all those firearms and loads to test! I will test a couple at a time, often just one. Glad your range is open again.
I just left my comfy gun club behind in Texas and will have to familiarize myself with the sprawling Butterfield range complex just east of Las Cruces.

You're more disciplined than me too. At most I test 2 or 3 before turning to plinking. Glad you finally got your range back open and where able to go.

I generally won’t take more than three guns out at a time. But it’s because I have a limited ability to really concentrate

I do my best with 1 gun, but I often take 2. For example, I'll take the single six to plink with while a rifle barrel cools, or for plinking with.

Long guns I'll take a centerfire and a rimfire. If I'm doing handguns my routine is to shoot up the ammo for whatever I am carrying and it's reloads at some point. In addition to one centerfire and one rimfire handguns. I try to take the same type of action for the two handguns. This may or may not be anything close to what I'm carrying. I'ts pretty rare I will take both long and short guns. That's one of the advantages of being retired. I can do things at my leisure.

There is one exception to this. When one or heaven help me both kids come along it can look like a bona fide arsenal.

I made up these loads last winter and had planned to test them out in the spring, however, stuff happened and I didn't make it out until now. So, while I usually don't do more than 2 or 3 at a time, I wasn't taking any chances that something else would interfere so I did them all at once. I'll tell you for sure I was ready to just hang out and plink for the fun of it when I finished the last testing.
