Marlin experts - first date for drilled/tapped receivers?

Post by O.S.O.K. »

Actually this is two questions. 1) Did Marlin drill and tap all receivers on the 336's after some date (excluding the current cas models)? and 2) if yes, then what date did that start?

I'm looking at a rifle who's serial number (listed) marks it as a 1968. However, the receiver isn't drilled/tapped for a scope mount.

Wondering if the serial listed is wrong and this is older. It looks older- but you know how looks can be on rifles...

Thanks in advance.

OK - you gave a date.

So, every 336 after 1956 (accepting the recent CAS models) was factory drilled and tapped for a scope mount?

Thank you for the response - but please clarify - I'm a little slow

[So, every 336 after 1956 (accepting the recent CAS models) was factory drilled and tapped for a scope mount?]

That's not the question you asked.

To clarify, you asked:

[ 1) Did Marlin drill and tap all receivers on the 336's after some date (excluding the current cas models)? ]

[ 2) if yes, then what date did that start? ]

I answered 1) indirectly, & 2) directly, by giving the year Marlin started D/T receiver tops for scope mounts.
I cannot speak as to whether or not all 336 receivers, excepting CAS models, were so done.
Sorry.

OK - I wasn't really asking that- I was asking what your reply really meant.

Thanks for clarifying.

OK, so if the receiver of this rifle isn't drilled and tapped, it's more than likely a 56 or earlier manufactured rifle.

That's all I really wanted to know.

Its got a two letter and 5 number serial number.

You may already be aware of it, but in case you haven't seen it...

It may have been on here, or Marlin's own website, or the MarlinOwners forum, but saw somewhere a fairly complete list and 'how-to' for decoding serial number to date of manufacture.

If you haven't seen that, I can try to find it and post a link, or someone else here probably knows it.

I'd like to apologise, if I came off a little testy, earlier - I've been a bit off my feed since Father's Day, but I'll get through it. Thanks.

Just to really confuse things........ the 39A barrel was d&t'd, from 1954-1956, on rifles that were sold to Sears. In 1957 Marlin introduced the Golden 39A that had the top of the receiver d&t'd and a scope mount rail was included.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

To further confuse matters, I have owned 336 rifles made as early as 1955 that were factory drilled and tapped for scope mounts.

I have several early marlins in the 49 to 54 time period.
To even make for more confusion. They stoped puting the wavey lines on top before they started d&t ing them (336`s). I have one with a bead blasted top w/o the mounting holes.
Brophies book is kind of spotty on that kind of info. But you can narrow it down close enough. :D

Yep, I had a 1953 K prefix 336.

No "waffle-top" and no D & T. But it did have the peep site holes.

That thing was scary accurate with 150gr Rem CorLok. 1" groups at 100yds with just iron sights. Wish I'd never sold it. :(

I have a 1946 model 36 that is D&Ted for both a receiver and a tang sight. I guess that does nothing to clear up the question, I just thought it was interesting. :)

Thanks for the help guys - Pete no need to appologize - you were right about my question.

Here's the rifle I WAS looking at. No more - the reserve price is over $400, so as they would say in NJ: "fogetaboutit":

Agree.

I like it - the configuration is appealing to me, but the chipped stock, lack of bluing, etc. decreases the value. But it is still appealing. Just not $400+ appealing.

I don't know why I'm looking right now anyway - I need to wait a couple months or sell something else...
