Slo-Mo Muzzle Exits

Post by AJMD429 »

.
It is interesting to see, especially on the pistols, how much gas comes out after the bullet so aggressively that it would seem like it might knock it off course.

Also interesting when they shoot the 308 how the muzzle brake on that particular gun really keeps those tumultuous blasting gases away from the base of the exiting bullet.

I’m also surprised how much smoky-looking gas appears to exit before the bullet comes out the muzzle. Obviously, the barrel has to be emptied of gas as the bullet comes forward, but I wonder if the smoky color is just from the air movement or if it’s actually combustion gas that is escaping past the bullet.

Gas always exits the muzzle first. All the old spark photographs in the early days showed that. I believe Mann in his book The Bullets Flight from Powder to Target explains how that happens. (https://www.amazon.com/Bullets-Flight-I ... B000JWM5OS)

Shotshells are notorious for wads disrupting patterns once the loads hit around 1500 fps.
When the OTC changed the load max to 24grams of shot but unrestricted speeds a few loads hit the market and they were terrible at the pattern board let alone breaking targets.
