the savage 1895, that preceded the 1899. chambered in 303 savage. can be identified by serial number ...or the hole in the top of the bolt!









this is the savage 1899, and this is a first year production rifle, very nice wood, maybe special order, 303 savage as well







both of these are excellent shooters. they seem to prefer bullets in the 180-190 grain range.

Two awesome Savage guns for sure! back in 1978 i bought a 1895 for 200 bucks, had it for about 15 years
then like a fool i sold it, was very unhealthy for deer

it is a cocking indicator : shows a C for cocked , an S for safe

Lovely pair! I really enjoy the early Savage 99s but have never seen, let alone handled a 1895. My favorite is an early 1899F carbine in 30-30. Very cool that you have proper tang sights for both.

A couple of wonderful rifles Harold. I enjoyed my brief foray into the world of the .303 Savage. Have only seen the 95 in a museum.

At one time I collected Savage lever guns and had about 8 of them when I decided to narrow down my interests to Marlin lever guns. I had a Model 1895 i got by luck when I saw it at a local gun show on a table marked as a Model 1899 Savage! It had a full octagon 26" barrel and was in .303 Savage like all 1895's were. Seller wanted a whopping $160 back in the late 1970's and I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough!
Those two you have are both really nice Savage rifles, especially that first year 1899 with deluxe wood!

a museum in fairbanks has a storied savage lever gun that was used in the gold rush. they had it labeled as an 1899, and it was for sure an 1895. i left them a note and i dont know if they every changed the label.

I've never found the Savage to be aesthetically pleasing, yet, something about it intrigues me, particularly the 303 Savage cartridge.

I think there are a lot of 1895's out there that owners don't know are 1895's! And about the same number of early 1899's that owners think are 1895's! I know I've seen many at gun shows advertised as "rare Model 1895" and told the sellers they weren't. Some listened and changed their tags, but others just listened and left the tags mismarked. Guessing they hoped a buyer would pay their premium price and not see them again!
