Re: OT: Oklahoma
I've live in Norman since 1973, wouldn't live anywhere else. I even work at OU. Okies are very friendly people, one of the things I like the most about Oklahoma. The fact that you're posting on this forum suggests you'll fit in just fine. I have friends originally from Mass. who chose to retire here...

OT: My Deer Hunting Cancelled by Bureaucrats
Hi Guys, been a while since I've posted. Got my '76 .45-75 sighted in and ready to take another deer or two. Or so I thought. Got an email from my friend that owns the ranch I hunt on...his insurance company threatened to raise his premiums by 37% unless he accepted a rider prohibiting all hunting, ...

Re: Marlin 1895 Cowboy
I have one. Very accurate. I would prefer a little more weight in the barrel but that's probably just me. It's a very good rifle.

Re: A Lever, A Semi-lever, and a Mauser
Sllmster: I estimate the big buck to be around 6 but when I asked Lee hadn't checked his teeth yet. The tines are really worn blunt. The area where he was shot was really torn up from him fighting other bucks and he had several scrapes on his neck and shoulders. O.S.O.K.: we were mostly hunting by u...

Re: Processing Deer Survey
Used to do my own but now I have a better system. I have a friend who is a custom single shot gunsmith. His wife developed a beef allergy a few years ago. Now I give them most of my venison. I do a friend a favor and it doesn't hurt to have your gunsmith owe you one! When keep a deer, I process it m...

A Lever, A Semi-lever, and a Mauser
Been a while since I posted, but I thought I'd share the results of our weekend deer hunt in western Oklahoma. On the left is me with my 8 pt. taken with my .45-70 High Wall & Malcolm scope. Load was a Lyman cast 300gr. Gould hollowpoint over 65grs of Swiss 2F. This is the 5th deer taken with th...

Re: OT - Wm. Malcolm scopes, any experience
I have two of the Malcolm scopes, one on a Chaparral 1876 and one on a High Wall. I use them for hunting and general shooting. They are good scopes for those purposes. I'm also a BPCR silhouetter shooter and for that I wouldn't consider anything but an MVA, although I dont' have one (yet).

I live in Norman, just south of Oklahoma City. The motorhome thing never happened. As 2row said, that story is 20 years old. At least.

Re: DC vs. Heller - Update
If the Dems pick up any Senate seats (all judicial nominees must be confirmed by the Senate and the Senate Judiciary Committee is a Who's Who of super liberals), McCain will have a hard time getting anybody more conservative than Karl Marx confirmed. Not to mention the fact that he's not likely to a...

The load was Hornady factory, the one with the red tip. Don't know the bullet wt or velocity. It entered on the right side, took out the top of the heart and exited just behind the left foreleg. A sumac on the far side of him was literally covered in blood; there was not one green spot showing on th...

Kirk, the photo was taken about 45 min to an hour after the kill, right after we hauled it back to the ranch. He was over 10 miles away following his escape. It was over 90 degress and he had a stomach full of grass, so it was beginning to swell. Not to worry, the meat was fine. Old Savage: the buff...

Lever Gun 1, Buffalo 0
Friday I got a call from some rancher friends who have a buffalo herd. A two year old bull had escaped and was on another ranch 10 miles away. They said they were going to put it down and asked if I wanted the meat. So, not being a total idiot, I rounded up a helper and we drove the 2 hrs to the ran...

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but the same pics went around about a year ago, only this time the location was supposedly here in OK, at Watonga (the date on this link and the above post indicates it's going around again). AWP101: you can use any ammo in them. I don't shoot in Dave's .22 silhouette matches so I don't know what the current ammo favorite is. I know at one time people were using Wolf match ammo, believe it or not. One of the things that makes Dave's liners so accurate is that he uses a match chamber ream...

In AWP101's post, the top unit is by Crossno, the bottom is the Lee Shaver. I started out with the Shaver, then had Crossno convert it to his system. The cartridge insert required by the Shaver unit is a PITA. So having had both types, I strongly recommend the Crossno (full disclosure, Dave Crossno ...

McCain-Feingold was bad, period, not just to conservatives. It prohibits negative ads that specifically mention a candidate by name, within a certain time period before the election (I believe it is something like 60 days). For example, I contribute money to the NRA's Institute for Legislative Actio...

McCain is actively opposed to many of the things I deeply believe in. Not only that, its not like he's just a run of the mill senator who passively voted for things I oppose, he INTRODUCED AND WROTE most of those bills, McCain-Feingold being a major one. The list is a long one. Based on this, I don'...

POLITICS - Hillary vs McCain
So if it comes down to Hillary vs McCain in the general election, whatcha gonna do? I can't stand Hillary but I don't know if I can vote for McCain, for a whole bunch of reasons...including the bill he introduced a few years ago that would have effectively made gunshows impossible. Talk about a less...

Auction with Lots of Leverguns
I know this is short notice but I was just sent the information. There will be an auction on Saturday in Elk City, OK (on 1-40 about 30 miles east of the Texas line) of over 200 guns, including lots of leverguns. The link is:

In the past two years my hunting partner and I have taken 4 deer with 45-70s loaded with black powder and one with a .45-75 loaded with 777. Bullets were 385gr cast RN (2 deer), Lyman Gould 300gr cast HP (2 deer) and a Sierra 300gr JHP. All were one shot kills. All but one were dropped where they st...

I believe the website omgb is referring to is
http://www.hammerdouble.com/index.html
While its true brass shells don't need to be crimped for singleshots and doubles, most repeaters ('87s, '97s, etc.) often have trouble feeding them smoothly without a slight roll crimp.
