Odd that John Taffin declares 44 Special alive and well and an article in the June 24 Handloader by another well known writer declares all 44 revolvers and calibers as dying.

I have that rifle in 30-30 and 38-55. Those actions will slick up just from normal use. The 30-30 version I have is the most accurate lever action I have ever owned. They are heavy though. Not a great carry all day gun. If you are a sit and ambush hunter ok.

That “oval P” on the barrel indicates it is a “Postal Order” replacement barrel not original to the gun. Winchester sold them through the mail. I have a 32-40 with a nickel steel oval P barrel. Bought it as a shooter as the bore is pristine. The gun is from 1907 but the barrel is way later.

Yes, the 30-30 ammo with silver tip bullets was very popular. Yellow box with bold Silvertip printed on front. I still have a few boxes stashed. The last I bought were the 76 Bicentennial red, white and blue box Silvertips. The cases are nickel plated with W 76 W stamped on head.

I have seen bores worse than that shoot pretty good. I would try a fast pistol powder like Unique that somewhat mimics black powder that “bumps up” the bullet diameter. Those cowboy loads are so anemic that little to no obturation takes place. Unique has gotten many a 32 WCF to shoot accurately.

Lost the 32-20 cylinder to my 32 Ruger Buckeye a few years ago. Never found it so I called Ruger to get it replaced and was told that gun had been so long out of production they would not even consider making a replacement cylinder. Guess I will just have to keep shooting 32 H&R.

Well those reformed “short” for 32-40 cases turns out to be a big plus. It allows 32 Special bullets to be crimped in the cannelure and still feed through a model 94 action. Try that with a 32-40 length case and the cartridge will jamb on top of the lifter.
