Re: The Win 1873?

One purchases and shoots a Winchester 73' (44-40) because he has a love for the design, history and nostalgia. The Winchester 73', when loaded properly, can certainly hold it's own out to 250 yards. Modern 44-40 200gr loads can be pushed downrange at historic 1,325fps when using rifle powders like R...

Dupont No.1 Smokeless Rifle Powder (Load Data "Wrapper")

As many if not all of you know, Dupont No.1 came out in 1894. One popular cartridge it was used in as we know it today was the 45-70. This powder was packed in a round RED keg looking much like a medium sized can of beans. Years ago I became familiar with such powders when recently (past recent year...

Re: WINCHESTER LITTLE BIG HORN CENTENNIAL 1876-1976 44-40 AMMO

Bryan, I started reloading in the late 60's. At that time most of the primers I was using were CCI. They were flat. The Federal and Winchester primers were domed. To keep from detonating them I had to grind the priming punch (original Lee Loader) to a concave shape. By the mid 1970's all the fresh ...

Oh, the M1873 and Schofield revolvers were long superseded by the Model 1909 when this particular 1920's ammo was manufactured, thus the shorter cartridge was still being used by the Military well into the 1920's.

Yes. The average velocity out of a Model 1892 rifle was 1,325 fps. It may be slightly slower in a carbine due to the shorter barrel, but not much.
