I believe the history of the 30-06 as our primary service cartridge for about 50 years, and a handful of wars in which literally millions of American men served, proves lots of folks can tolerate the "aught six." :D A man equipped with a 30-06 can take on just about anything, man or beast.

Be careful with the tinkering. I've polished a number of them in my day, but I'm far from a gunsmith. You can screw a 1911 up pretty easy if you start removing metal. The fit of the frame ramp to barrel is fairly critical. +1 Most problems with the 1911 are magazine related. I would start there.
