I've seen the results of over 20 deer shot with 245/295 grain Powerbelts. They come apart in little pieces when pushed 1750+ fps. Keep the speed to under 1600 fps and they'll be fine for deer. When the speed is slowed down to that level they penetrate to the far side, while mushrooming to about .70-...

Stupid move on my part....a 7 lb, custom, synthetic stocked, 378 Weatherby Magnum(no brake). Shooting 300 grain Partitions @ 2800+ fps. Absolutely vicious!!!! One shot and I handed it back. I want at least 10 lbs of gun weight for one of them, IF, I do it again.

"Speed or Turbo" goat. Some of the most delicious venison you'll ever eat if they're killed quickly. Almost like a semi-sweet chocolate. Chase them all over the place and I'd rather eat tumble-weeds.

Re: OT Effective range for #2 shot on a Coyote?
50 yds, if you can hold a tight pattern that far. I killed a 35lb 'yote a few years ago during turkey season with 1-3/4oz of #4 lead turkey load @ 45 yards(super full choke). Absolutely smoked him. I would go for larger shot if the song dogs get bigger or further than that.

Re: Hornady to drop Light and Heavy Magnum ammo
CRS, glad to see someone that had good luck with it. Out of 4 different rifles ( .243, 308, 30-06, and a 270), only the 270 shot it with any decency. 1 1/4" @ 100 yds, then again it did that with EVERY 130 grain load I tried. Should've kept that one

Straight 2.5x or 1-4x Leupolds are great. My pick of all the choices. If you like Weaver they have the little V3 (1-3x) for short $$$. They're nice, however a little short on the eye relief (3").

Joe,
The Hornady XTP bullets are easy to tell apart.....The MAG version has the bullet jacket rolled over the nose INTO the hollow cavity. the regular version stops at the rim of the cavity. I was told this by the Hornady technicians.

Re: OT: Suggestions for a father and son hunt.
I think a bison hunt would be the thing. It might be tough finding a combination of conditions suitable though. +1 on Hobie's idea. What about a ranch, meat bull hunt in the Sand Hills of Nebraska or Texas. Relatively flat terrain and the ranch owner may be able to accomodate a vehicle for your dad...
