Re: Original 1876 win 45-60 key holing bullets help

Black powder will usually bump up an undersize bullet, but some of them commercial cast bullets are to danged hard, and don't bump up at all. Lots of old rifles need soft bullets and BP, because a bullet big enough to fill the rifling often won't chamber. I had that problem with a .38-55, which shoo...

The .32-40 must be one of the rarest calibres in the 1894, I have only ever held one. The carbine in that calibre is nearly impossible to find in Canada.

I don't think a modern 1895 carrier would work, as the so-called "1895" is really just a 336. The old 1895 is quite a bit longer and wider. I know the ejector will interchange, but everything else looked bigger to me.

Sixgun is right, sometimes an old gun is best left as a parts donor to resurrect other guns. Years ago, I bought an old Winchester 1894 round barrel rifle for $100. It had been owned by Indians on a fishing boat, and was a real basket case. Sewer pipe bore, and everything was rusted and pitted. Howe...

I have sometimes wondered about the quality of old time Marlins, the ones I find always have broken wood, and often multiple broken parts. The 1895 I had even had a broken tang, it was all welded up. Awesome! I have shot some deer with my old Winchesters, but never got the opportunity to try my '73 on one.... yet... The most modern rifle I have used for hunting in recent years would be my 1895 in .303 Brit. I have very little interest in modern rifles anymore, they are so boring.

If any of the wood is loose, it will affect accuracy, but in my experience, the fit of the buttstock is the most important. Re: Range Report - Model 64 Winchester 32 Special

If you get vertical stringing from a Winchester, be it a 92, 94, 95, or whatever.... Check the fit of the buttstock between the upper and lower tangs. Sometimes, adding some shims under the upper tang tightens up the shooting quite a bit. A loose butt can throw shots waay high at even 100 yards.

It always amazed me that Winchester sold more octagon rifles than round ones, as their octagon rifles are noticeably heavier than the round rifles. The round rifle is more practical, in my opinion. I guess with the older Marlins, the opposite would be true!

The tension in the slider is easily fixed. Simply remove the slider, and carefully pinch the sides together. Reassemble the sight and it will be tight again. I must be lucky, I have only had to adjust the windage on one of my old Winchesters, and they eat handloads almost exclusively. :)

Have you tried it at all with the factory sights? Most old Winchesters that I have owned, have been pretty much on target, and only a few needed minor adjustments. Do you have the ladder rear sight? The shimming business on tang sights is not very satisfactory, unless you confine your shooting to one distance, say, 100 yards. If your sight is not level, any elevation adjustment will also be a windage adjustment.

Tang sights are not the best option for carbines, unless you get a windage adjustable one. The older carbines have a fixed front sight, so no windage there. The old advice "shim the tang sight base" for windage does not really work. If the base is shimmed, every elevation adjustment moves ...
