Not sure they were ever produced, I tried getting one several time, Remington kept telling me that they didn't have any in yet.

Is this for a gun part? If so I wouldn’t try it. I suspect most hardened parts on a SS gun are thru hardened and not case hardened. Also you don’t know what type of Stainless you have. I do know that I use Stainless in my Color Case Hardening; fixtures, containers etc.. no measurable hardening.

Again Is this an original or Repo. If its a repo why not have the mag tube threaded into the frame. If its an original, mag tube hangar, mag plug w/lip and screw thru mag plug. Winchester had the same problems with the 45-90s and 50 cals, full mag and heavy recoil would cause mag tube to move forwar...

Well Kirk, Funny you should mention that. I do have Winchester’s (1909) Elastic Limit, Breaking Strength and Elongation data for the steels, BUT...... Winchester used different heat treat methods (Time, Temp, quench etc) for different applications ie… heat to 1500 deg, quench reheat to 600 deg w...

Mike D Yes the smokeless barrels are either Nickel steel or Winchester Proof Steel, and are usually if not always marked. I just cut off a chunk of Winchester’s Proof Steel, we’re going to try and get a breakdown of the it’s components. The .45 carbon steel would be in the 1886 with smokeless ...

Winchester Steels

A while back I posted a brief synopsis of Winchester Steels, thought it might be a good time to repost, unless I can talk Jim or Hobie into making this a into Mini Article and permantly posting. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated Mike At around the turn of the century, Wincheste...

One other thing to consider is that machine engraving can give you predictable results. There are a lot of "engravers" out there, some that I have seen were terrible, a couple of them were "big names" in the gun engraving world, or at least advertised that they could do a good jo...

LeverBar Did you buy this rifle from GB or AA, I would complain... At least give us his name so that someone else won't get taken. Are you sure that the upper tang has been welded, can you see the weld? If not what's the sn of the frame? possibly its a later frame w/o markings. Anyway I agree with t...

Ok, first you didn't say if this is a antique Winchester or a modern one. If its an antique then no, the numbers are just assembly numbers and or inspectors marks. Very seldom do you find assembly numbers that match on a 94 unless its pretty darn special; ie.. engraved, 3x wood w/modifications to th...

"In the interest of learning, what is it that gives the letter on the 86 away as not being authentic to you?" Because its not authentic. No museum letter head, "antique restoration" the museum dosn't do restorations. I'll run the SNs of both guns in the next couple of days, see w...
