got my venison for the year

I was out sneaking around my friend's farm this morning to see if anything was around. I had been hunting his place almost all week. I missed one last Sunday and haven't seen anything since. I was very frosty this morning and the ground was frozen hard making walking sort of crunchy. I did my normal...

Serial number stamped on the end of the forearm matches rifle. A model T is apparently semi rare, yet all photos I have seen of the T model have a curved lever. I'll keep searching when i have time. Any ideas appreciated.

Load data might be handy. I will probably shoot 170 gr jacketed as I don't cast my own. I have found brass at $80/100 new Privi brass. Getting more and more tempting to turn this into a winter project and redo the wood etc. I seem to be able to see the rear sight pretty well and it could just be my ...

Re: Savage 99 EG in 303 savage

My mistake in saying it is an EG (got to get these glasses checked) No other model designation other than Model 99. I removed the forearm and after I got the spruce needles and other dirt out of there all I saw stamped on the face of the receiver was the letter T. (It is not a take down) The forearm...

What I have found out so far is it is circa 1936/37. On the road today so I will take it apart and check it out for other markings. Not sure if I'll keep it or sell it yet. At that price I couldn't leave it for someone else. I also picked up a Mossberg 500 in 12 ga with vent rib and removable choke ...

Savage 99 EG in 303 savage

I think I did ok today. I picked up a 99 EG in 303 savage with a box of Imperial 190 gr rounds for $150. Seemed good to me. There is a crack in the stock by the butt plate but repairable. Bore is clean and sharp. There was a sling with hook type attachments and round eyes in the wood. I have similar...

When I load I always put the empty cases mouth down in the block (primers up) this way I'm sure the case is primed properly and empty. Once charged with powder obviously right side up. I once seated a bullet on an empty case. luckily only at the range when I found out, but still had to knock the bul...

I'm not quite sure yet what I'll be using. Probably my 356 model 94, but I have a savage 99 F in 300 that isn't blood stained yet and a left hand Zastava side lever in 6.5x55 that hasn't been carried much yet, but shoots real nice. Time and weather will tell I guess. Best of luck everyone.

I like the tire trick too, never thought of that either. The wood looks very straight grained with no knots and with the now on the ground frozen too. Makes splitting easy even with a regular axe. the idea is good though.

Re: What Scope would you suggest

I am a fan of low power scopes. 1.5 to 4.5 or 2 to7 on most of my rifles with scopes. I do have a 3 to 9 but it is usually at the lower setting. I only use the higher setting to check out the rifle. If I can't see the target (animal ie deer etc) at the lower setting it is too far away in my opinion.

I would think penetration is most important. The FTX might expand too quickly for moose. I get good accuracy with 200 gr Hornady round nose. I have not tried the Speer 225 in my 356, but it might be a good compromise if it shoots well in your rifle.

I have fired a lot of that CIL ammo. My Dad used to work at the factory where it was made and could get factory seconds. Usually nothing major especially the shotgun ammo. They usually had either a bad crimp or double stamped shot size. I still have a few around.
