Re: We've talked about needing to be creative shooters...
Some guy in Nigeria IS a creative shooter. The blog post about shotgun slugs made using a 16mm socket caught my eye... I won't even go into the creative mayhem which can be wrought by 2-3 15 year old boys with ancient damascus-barreled doubles, a sack of old paper shells, a bucket of old bearings a...

Speaking for myself- 94 Winchester in 30 WCF.
From 135 grain cast on up through the heaviest jacketed bullets, it will handle anything from quail on the ground through getting the winter's meat past 200 yards. It has been, and remains, a friend in troubled times.

I would tend to agree that the 94 is capable well past 200 meters, but having read a lot of Cooper over the years and corresponded with him a bit, I think you have to take his statement in context. Cooper's concept of riflery involved going from 'slung' to 'hit' in about the time it takes most of us...

Our 16" Puma in .45 Colt is so light & fast handling that it don't even feel like a rifle; but it will spit 335 Keiths at about 1365 fps when such loads are called for. I sure wouldn't feel nekkid with it (and the Old Vaquero) along. http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x187/SargeMO/VaqnPuma....

I won't own a rifle that don't have iron sights on it.
I won't scope a rifle until those irons are zeroed at optimal range for the cartridge it's chambered for.

The inspiration for this exercise was a discussion I had with Joe, regarding the sight steps on my pre-64 Winchester Model 94. Amen to your last line. I fiddled with a Foolproof on a 94 Winchester some years ago, out to about 600 yards. I get along fine with a flat-topped conventional back sight, and a fine white bead up front. The white bead helps a lot at dusk & dawn when much good game shooting occurs. I've tried about everything and my take is this- time and ammo spent mastering one set of sights, beats money spent on two o...
