The old Marlin makes meat
After seeing about 30 deer and no great bucks, I decided to shoot doe for the pot. 15 minutes after sundown this two year old, with four others and a half dozen spring deer, entered my hayfield from the west at about 230 yards. They kept herding up, but moving closer. With fading light, this one ste...

In the 80s I had a used 1894 Marlin 44 Mag that was just about hopeless. It only saw factory ammo while I owned it. After much trial and error I finally got it under 3" at 50 yards with, IIRC Federal 180 JHP. By comparison, I had a SMLE Jungle Carbine I could shoot that well at twice the distan...

I've had a 200 yard range on private property available since 2005 and before that, I shot at a club where one of the informal matches was 200 meter bowling pins. I've shot lever actions on all of them. A couple or 94s proved pretty accurate. When my eyes were still good, groups like this weren't un...

Agree 100% on the 1860 grip, which has about ruined me for anything else. My old IJ Cattleman weighs less that a 5 1/2" Vaquero but is far more comfortable with magnum loads. I do have to tuck my little finger under the grip to keep my knuckle from getting whacked with 240s at 1425, but 44-40 l...

I mentioned in another thread that I have never particularly cared for Ruger's basic New Model grip frame. Apparently I'm not the only one. One thing I did try that helped quite a bit was Texas Grips extended grip for Rugers. More in the link below the pic, if anyone's interested. https://www.thesix...

Excepted from https://www.thesixgunjournal.net/in-defense-of-the-30-30-winchester/ The new 1894 was notably handier than the vast majority of big game rifles then available and it didn’t kick as hard, either. These qualities endeared it generations of American hunters, ranchers, and lawmen. Yes, law...

After owning several Redhawks, my opinion is they have two deficiencies that make them substantially harder to shoot well, in unsupported shooting, than a S&W DA or good SA revolver. The first is excessive single action sear engagement. You have to pull the trigger farther, to release the hammer...

Fall is here and it's time to check guns before hunting season.
