OT- Winchester 770 ?

Post by 2ndovc »

Guys,

Saw a Winchester Model 770/ 30-06 at a local shop today for $279.00!

Don't know much about the 770. I'm guessing that it was a lower end model of the Model 70 but seems like that's a really cheap price for any Winchester these days. The wood had a few minor scrapes but the blue was very good W/ an excellent bore.

My brain keeps telling me to go back and get it because it seems like a good buy. I need anther '06 bolt gun like I need a hole int he head but......

Anyone know anything good, bad or indifferent about the 770?

I don't know about a 770, but a buddy of mine had a 670 years ago. Was good quality, just a cheaper piece of wood, and little less polish than the M70. His was .243 and was around inch or less at 100 yds consistantly. I would think the price is fair...better if can get it for less.....

All the Model 70 series guns are great. $279 is a good price. My 670 is boring to shoot. Too accurate.
Kind regards,

I figure if it's still there tomorrow at lunch time it was ment to be.

Don't need it but that's never stopped me before :D

I have my Grandfather's pre '64 model 70 / 250 Savage. 500 yd woodchucks are piece of cake :D but it's not
something I'd take out banging through the woods deer hunting. Too nice of shape and too much sentimental value.

If I remember correctly, the 770 was nothing more than the Model 70 of the time with a blind magazine as opposed to the one that opens out of the bottom of the receiver. The stock was walnut with impressed checkering. The 670 was an even cheaper version that had a light colored hardwood stock and the same blind magazine. The barrels of all model 70 variants were made in the same department. At the time these guns were being made and sold, I was working at the New Haven plant, albeit in the military ammo division. The plant covered a huge part of Winchester Avenue, and had row after row of empty buildings, or buildings where machinery that had been used to make military products was being stored. Winchester had a fetish at the time for commemorating everything they could think of with a gussied-up model 94, in carbine and rifle length. Those, as well as leverguns for Sears, occupied row after row of space. I never knew anybody that bought a 770 or 670--and being left-handed, a right-handed bolt gun back then never held any interest for me. They are probably good shooters--much like lower-end Savage or Remington rifles.
