1972 Win 94 refurb project now complete - pics
OK, I just finished installing the buttstock, buttplate and did the d/t for the tang sight Thursday eve. So, It's all done.
For those who didn't see my other post, this started as a basic carbine that had a pitted barrel. I installed the Numrich 26" front end kit after rechambering it to 30-30 Akley Improved - installed a tang sight and fit a replacement crescent buttstock/buttplate. This is the biggest gunsmithing challenge that I've ever undertaken.
Phwew. Whatever the guys that do custom stock inletting get paid... isn't enough. That was the hardest part of this project for me by far. The buttstock was inlet for an older 94 receiver and I had to get it into shape for this 1972 model. While its good enough for OSOK, I won't be offering my services out for hire The buttplate was a chore too - it came "as cast" and I had to remove the mould lines, drill the screw holes, fit it to the stock (more inletting! ), sand, polish and blue - used Brownell's Oxpho blue - good stuff.
Anyhoo, here's how it started:
Basic, ranger model (I'm guessing as the wood was beach or other white hardwood).
And here's what it looks like now:
I've always liked this configuration of levergun and always thought that the 94 Winchester would be the best base model for this as it's light and chambers the speedier rounds.
With the 26" barrel and the AI chamber, I can expect 2600 fps 150 grain loads easy - at normal 30-30 pressures. The tang sight has a medium sized aperture screwed in which I like for hunting and target shooting. It allows very precise shooting but can be screwed off for lower light conditions and closer work.
I'm planning on hunting with this this season - given that it shoots acceptably well. I'm anticipating that it will but time will tell. I've got 100 cast bullet loads made up on new RP brass that I'm going to shoot tomorrow to fireform the brass. Of course, it it shoots those loads well, that will be a very good sign - if it doesn't do so hot, I'll reserve judgement until the AI loads are tried. My experience with my other 30-30's is that they like near-maximum loads the best.

You had a picture of what you wanted in the back of your skull, and you made it come to pass with a lot of work. Nice job, I'd like to own that rifle myself!!.

Nice work! I really like that configuration in a Model 94, and I think you've really captured the look... Here's hoping she'll shoot as good as she looks!

Looks great! I agree that fitting the wood is the most time consuming. But watch out now. More 94 projects will come now that you've figured out the basics. Make sure that you post your range reports with the AI conversion.

Re: 1972 Win 94 refurb project now complete - pics
Thanks guys. I really like it. It's certainly not perfect- there are flaws that testify to my amature gunsmith status
I just got back from the range - shot 100 cast bullet loads to fireform the cases - did great! I did have a couple failure to fires - looked like a light firing pin strike... hmm. But anyway, it did pretty darned good with the cast bullets. Here's a target that shows a five shot group and 5 fireformed cases.
All of the cases survived the fireforming in perfect condition - no splits or other problems whatsoever. So, now I'm ready to load up some test loads using 150 grian Speers - probably with Varget powder as it seems to be the best performer.

No, its from Nurich (Gun Parts Corp) - and is marked simply "30 W.C.F." - mine has A.I. behind that - added by me.Marc wrote:Good looking and a shooter too! You can't beat that.

I guess there's a gent somewhere that can put the Winchester markings on them if you fancy. I don't really care.

gamekeeper - thanks.
And I was just sitting here thinking about the light primer strikes when when I remembered that I used some magnum rifle primers for the cast bullet loads - I have a bunch of them and decided that they'd do just fine for this chore...
I'm betting that the issue will go away with the use of standard rifle primers... I never had any problems with the rifle before... so that's probably it.

I am doing almost the same project, but mine will be bored to .38-55. I have a PG lever and lower tang, so need to find a late '60s-early '70s 94 with a grooved receiver that will accept the tang with the rails on the forward portion.

Beautiful job! It is now a very nice-looking rifle. I especially like that half-octagon and the curved buttplate.

That is a job that I am sure gave you a great sense of accomplishment The way you did it is about exactly how I like my '94's. Tang sight, half rd/oct., forend with a cap. The oxy blue sure came out nice also. The iceing on the cake is the fact that it is also a shooter, for as Colonel Whelen said, "Only accurate rifles are interesting" ----------- Sixgun

Thanks gents - it is rewarding - I really didn't know if I could pull it off - a lot of new ground for me. There were several times when I thought I'd have to take it to a smith... and then, darn the torpedos! That's the way it was with my first AK build too - studied up and got the jigs but doing it was much more... nerve racking.
I'm looking forward to testing some AI loads now and seeing it it really can shoot.
