Half way there! Preview Win 1895

Post by abcollector »

Okay so I've asked a couple questions about the Winchester 1895 vs Winchester BB .444 Marlin and bore size of a slugged new Winchester 1895 for cast bullet use. I elected to go with the Win 1895 in .405 Win. I found one on GB, thought it was a decent price and won it. Just yesterday it arrived at my dealer and I was able to get up there and start the paper work. Now I just have to wait the ten days( ) before it's in my hands

Here are a couple of pics of her-

I'll have some more questions for you all in a bit.
Thanks everyone!

She's a beauty! :D Nothing quite as nice as getting a new toy to play with, especially one in a different caliber.

crs,
She's a beauty! Wow! Two things I noticed right away on yours- the receiver sight and the recoil pad. The sight looks like a Williams FP. That will be something I have to address but need some input as to which one. So far it looks like my choices are a) Williams FP, b) Lyman 66 or c) a reproduction of the Lyman 21 from Buffalo Arms. I've used both the Williams and Lyman 66 and like them but I don't know anything about the Lyman 21. I guess it's more "period" correct for the 1895 but how is it to use compared to the other two? Durability, bulkiness?

And the recoil pad. Did you have the stock cut down or just add it? What type of pad is it?

Have you done any loading of cast bullets? Or any reloading for that matter?

Thanks!

Thanks a lot Pete44ru! Just what I needed, another receiver sight to stew over! Okay, details. Who make it and what's it called? Also, did have that to change the height of the front sight?

Anyone with the .405 and the reproduction 1895's. Which of the two loaded Hornady ammo types tend to be more accurate? The FP or SP?

I bought and installed the Lyman clone - as you can see, it just looks right. It's extremely adjustable both elevation and windage. I does require a hole to be drilled in your receiver though - it uses the existing front screw hole and the rear must be drilled/tapped - they provide the drill and tap.

OS,
That had to have been long before my time. I use a dealer up in the Palmdale area, there's one closer to me but the one time I had them do a transfer for me they gave a lot of attitude and I haven't been back. Maybe I'm wrong but you should treat a customer like you want them to come back and give you more business. Since then I use this other dealer for transfers and buy my other stuff online. Saves time, gas and I don't have to be out in all the traffic that is so common these days.

Of the factory loads my rifle preferred the fp to the sp. To get the best in accuracy from the sp bullet I found I needed to seat it out quite a ways, enough so that it'll engrave into the rifling. But as in most thing riflery, your rifle may be totally different.

I mounted the Lyman 38 repro on mine. It's definetly less bulky that the reciever sight, but it also soon became apparent how that sight got the knickname climbin lyman. The side lever can come loose and the sight can travel where it wants in elevation while carrying the gun.

If they didn't change the size and profile of the buttstock, and you find a recoil pad may be your best friend, the Limbsaver 10112 pad is a real close fit, with just a couple of spots to sand off to make a good fit.

The peep on that .405 is an XS, I pulled off a Marlin M-1894; and I added a higher XS White-Line front sight blade (ordered new), ILO the issue low post.

It worked great, after D/T'n two holes in the bolt top.

It attaches to the trigger group, which drops down when you cycle the action.

[why is the lever shaped like that on Win 1895's ?]

The M-1895 Winchester lever locks in the closed position, until unlocked by the pressure of the fingers against the lower part of the loop during the cycling of the lever/bolt.

abcollector;
This link to my post on my .405 should answer your questions and maybe some more:

http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... 260#p31260

WRT the installation of the recoil pad, it may have been installed without cutting off the stock. See comparison with my other 1895 .405. The 1895 Deluxe also feels about 1 inch shorter when shouldering it.

Here is my 1895 Winnie in .405 win. This is by far becoming my favorite rifle. The only difference in mine is now I have a Lyman 66wb reciever sight and a sling. Taking it bear hunting later this month.

I don't think you will be disappointed.
