New Ruger Bisley

Post by Lastmohecken »

I traded for a used Ruger Bisley. I haven't owned one in 20 years or more. When they very first came out, way back there, I bought the first one I ever seen, and they were only available in the 7.5" Blued version for a while. I promptly took it to a gunsmith at the time and had it cut down to about 4-3/4" and had the sight soldered back on. I shot it for years, but eventually sold it to a friend and it's traveled about among friends a time or two, but he would never turn loose of it now, says it's the only big bore he could ever hit with. Anyway, I saw this one in a gunshop, and currently they seem hard to find. I really wanted one in 45 Colt, because it would have a fluted cylinder and be a little lighter, but decided to get this because it's the only one of knew of and I could actually hold it in my hand and examine it before I bought it.

The Ruger Bisley is pretty good for heavy recoil, however, I never liked the Bisley hammer and changed it out to a Wider taller Super Blackhawk hammer on my old gun. I thought I would give it a try again with the Bisley stock hammer, but nothing has changed, so this time, I think i will try the standard Blackhawk hammer, as it's taller still. I can't shoot the stock Bisley hammer very fast, for followup shots because the gun slides back in the hand and I can't cock it, because the low hammer touches the web of my gun hand. The taller hammer of the Super Blackhawk has more clearance, and I could always re-cock the gun quickly, without having to re-grip the gun. I am trying to find a source for a New Model Blackhawk hammer. Looks like Ebay for a used one, or Midway for a new one, so far. I actually think I got one direct from Ruger many years ago. I think they gave it to me, but I don't know that's still a possibility or not.

Yes, I saw that on Midway, but they didn't have the other parts needed in stock for the plunger. I could have taken them out of my other original hammer, but I found a used one on ebay last night, which was the complete assembly, so I just ordered it, instead.

Thank you, it was hardly used. Actually, I think I remember seeing the gun in the shop when brand new. Someone I think bought it but didn't keep it very long. But it looked to in good working order, so I when ahead and took a chance on it. You never know on used or new guns, if there's a problem, but this one seems fine. Someone who bought it, probably shot a few round of 44 mags and decided it was still to much recoil for them.

Years ago I bought a Bisley in .45 Colt and later another in .44 mag. The barrel length on both was 7.5" and no other barrel lengths were available so I took them to a gunsmith who cut them off to 5.5". I really enjoy the Bisley grip frames and in fact subsequently bought two medium-frame Bisleys, one in .44 special and another in .41 mag, both with 5.5" barrels. Good stuff!

Yes, I would like to have one in 45 colt, myself. Lipsey's had one out a while back, but by the time I found out about it, none were to be had.
