Possibly OT - What was the first...

Post by Ysabel Kid »

FIREARM that you ever shot? Not airgun, firearm. Make, model, cailber - when, where and how old were you? We might have posted this on the old forum, but I thought this would be fun for a Friday (by the way, are you wearing red today?)!

I'll start us off:

H&R Model 750 Pioneer, .22 LR; Indiana; ~ 1976; 12 years old

My first centerfire was my Dad's service revolver, a S&W Model 19 though instead of firing .357 Magnums, we were shooting .38 Specials that day. It was also in Indiana, around 1980, and I was 16.

Shotgun was a 12 gauge at a friend's farm. Don't remember the details, other than the kick! It was also in Indiana, and I was 12 or 13.

First centerfire rifle was a bolt action .308 that belonged to another friend's dad, around 1982 also in Indiana, and I was 18.

First blackpowder was the same year, an 1860 Army Colt clone in .44, and also in Indiana.

Okay, I've already flubbed the post - gave a lot more than just "my first", but it was fun living in the memories again for a moment before work starts!!! :D

P.S. - first air gun was, of course, a lever - a Daisy Red Ryder in 1969 at 5 years old!!! :D :D :D

Dad's .22 rifle. I believe it was a Marlin but it was stolen shortly after I started shooting. I don't recall how old I was, probably 6 or 7.

To be honest, it could be one of two, as I was very young...maybe 5, and can't quite place it. Either an Ithaca 49 single shot(lever) 22 or another family piece, a Wards Western Field(Mossberg) 22 bolt gun that belonged to my Grandfather. Before being green was in, we destroyed alot of beer bottles and beer cans at the base of Superstition Mountain and generally had the time of our lives. Then, we usually got to go eat fried chicken afterwards at nearby Kovac's corner. That's how my Dad got me roped into being a shooting fanatic. Shoot, eat, shoot, eat........

I was exposed to so many firearms at an early age I can't remember the first one i shot.
My first firearm was a Made in Brazil 20ga single shot at 10 or 11 years old and then my Savage 30-30 around 14 years old model 340.
That which does not kill me has made a grave tactical error.

It was either my JROTC Rem 513-T .22 (which I also now own) or a neighbor's Browning HiPower 9mm (which I don't).

It all depends on whether or not I started skunk trapping the summer before or after my freshman year at HS.

I can't remember.

My dads .22 Remington Speedmaster, I have a hard time remembering the very first time shooting it, must have been 6 or 7 years old. My dad still has that rifle.

I took my first shot with my grandfather's Winchester single shot 22. I was probably only about 8 years old and it became a constant hunting companion until my father gave me a Marlin bolt action 22 years later. The extractor on that single shot was so worn it couldn't eject the cartridge cases, I had to pry them out with a pocket knife, but it was more than accurate enough for rabbit and squirrel. I don't know what happened to the rifle when he died, but I sure have a lot of early memories about walking in the woods with it.

Do 22's at Boy Scout camp count?
If so I was probably 9 or 10

otherwise would be a Colt 1911.
paper route supervisor took some of us out to the desert
and everyone was shooting high, said to aim at the bottom
of the old beer bottles we were shooting at, needless to say
I creased the label, lol. I was probably 12 or 13 then.

A bolt action, 20 gauge Mossberg with one of those choke restrictors hanging on the end of the barrel. Dove, Quail, Squirrels, and deer all fell to that gun.

First handgun was a Ruger SBH in .44mag with a 7 1/2" barrel, followed by a Colt .45 ACP Govt Model, series 70.

First centerfire was a shotgun, Dad's Winchester Model 12, 12 gauge. Wish I had it but it was stolen.

Either my Grandad's ancient .22 Premier pump (a Ward's by Savage, I think) or the Model 72 Winnie I brag about. I have both now. Don't remember how old I was....

22 single shot bolt, Whippit (Stevens? don't have it here handy, it's at my brother's house up the hill) that my father bought when he was 12(1942). I was about 8, so we're talking around 1963/4.

I was screwed from the start. My uncle, the great white hunter, bought me a .410 H&R at my first Christmas, at four months old. I was very young but I believe it was the first firearm I ever shot. I had also shot Dad's High Standard H-D Military at five or six and 1894 .30-30 by the time I was 8yrs old. I was 8yrs old when I got my first pellet gun, the official beginning of the end.

Got my first .22 rifle around age 10.

Bought my first handgun at age 12, with my own money, a Virginian Dragoon .22 convertible that I still have. Even then I knew single actions were for me.

Got my first big bore at age 16, a Redhawk .44.

First gun ever: I think I was 12 or 13 shooting a Old Remington Favorite falling block action in .22 in Rural Central Florida, shooting frogs in the drainage ditches...I remember shooting a watermoccasin and then bringing it back to the house on a length of PVC pipe....it is amazing I have lived this long.

First time I too shot one of my Dad's friend's guns; my Dad always said he had enough of guns in WW2 so never had any. I was about 9, it was a .357 short barrel revolver. Shot it off a bench rest, they forgot to tell me to anchor my elbow on the bench so when I fired my elbow was about 3 or 4 inches above the bench. WHAM, elbow bone to bench, hurt for a week. Always something. Didn't turn me off though, now .357 is my favorite.

IIRC I was 12, at Boy Scout camp, and it was either a Winchester or Remington single shot bolt.

First centerfire was my 30-30, at 38.

First shotgun was an Ithaca 20g, at 14 or 15.

First handgun was 686 at 18 or 19.

Great responses guys!

I told my son about this thread, and he asked me to post his "results" (he's 9), so here they are:

First firearm - Rossi model 62 pump; .22 colibri, age... 2 (okay, I helped him hold it).

First centerfire - Rossi Puma 92 in .45 Colt (yeah!)... age 5 (yes, I had to just barely help him support the forearm).

First shotgun - Verona 12XS 12 gauge (semi)... this summer at age 9.

All were in OH while visiting his grandfather's farm. He's looking forward to firing his first rifle cartridge and blackpowder muzzle-loader as soon as he can!!! :D

And, though she's in bed sleping right now, I'm sure my son (also in bed now) would like her "stats"! :D

First firearm - her big brothers Marlin 15YN "little buckeroo", firing a .22 Short (and she hit the can!!! :D 8) ) - this summer at her grandfather's farm in OH.

She also fired my Ruger Mark II - both with Daddy helping her (she's just 5 years old).

No centerfire, shotgun, centerfire rifle, or black powder... yet!!!

Thanksgiving day 1971 I shot a Wards Hercules 20ga that my day had bought new around 1935 for 6 dollars.
First 22, Remington Model 4 rolling block that was hand down from dad also. That was a year or so latter, Gramp and Dad thought the shotgun was a lot safer in CT. After Dad gave me the first few training sessions I had the run of Gramps property with it.
He told me remember You can't call accidents back.
