The scary part is he's a Commander...

I wonder if the cartridge cases are photoshopped....?

I think it’s hilarious and someone is having a heck of a laugh about this.

Maybe he was practicing on targets that were "really small and very far away"...

That's how they'd look through a Navy Scope!

I've heard of "Up periscope!" -- but never "Reverse rifle scope"

A Navy Commander would be the Captain of a Guided Missile Destroyer. As such, he's a "jack-of-all-trades, master of none." As my Captain told me when I was offered a promotion to Warrant Officer, "I don't have to know everything, it's why I have experts in virtually every field to advise me." Small arms handling might be one of those things he's not even casually acquainted with. Doesn't surprise me in the least that he doesn't know fore from aft on a scope... his gunner's mate's an asshat for handing him a M4 in such a configuration. Then again, he might be an asshat for his crew to prank him thusly.

Those cases do appear rather large to be 5.56s... But, no telling how much closer to the camera they are than he is...
