Tornado Hit Us Wednesday

Post by Rube Burrows »

Yesterday I woke up and started working from home. The weather was supposed to be bad so our 11 year old was home from school. The weather was coming in waves and I was videoing the weather and texting videos back and fourth with my daughter. I saw our trampoline lift off from the back yard and leave sight. It landed in the front yard after traveling about 50 feet. It crushed the basketball goal we had in the driveway. I started filming again and things got very strange. It don't pick up on the video well but the water was just floating. Being pulled from all sides it was not going up nor down nor side to side. Just floaing like there was no gravity. It was very erie and only lasted a couple seconds which seemed very long. Then a 30x18 foot secton of our roof flew off of the front of our house and I was able to catch it on camera. My son and wife were in the bathroom with my son freaking out. We tried to remain calm. The Tornado part only lasted a few seconds but it took that part of the roof and dumped tons of water into the house.

We are all safe and sound today by the grace of God. The material things can be replaced. The people here can't. So happy no one was hurt.

The Tornado was recorded as a F2 Tornado and ripped through the town doing lots of damage but thankfully there were no major injuries some how.

We prepare here in Louisiana for Hurricanes. Our buildings are built for high winds but a tornado is a different animal.

Here is a video I made and if you wantch long enough you can see the actual storm footage and the roof tear off.

Glad you and the family are doing well. I know how your feeling now afterwards and it is starting to sink in what happened.
I went through an F4 in 2011 and I count my blessings everyday that we were not hurt.

...been through a couple and lucked out as well. Horrible things. Almost no way to build tornado proof buildings and even if you did your trees and so on would be gone in an instant.

You remained calm especially not being in a basement or anything, leaving you very vulnerable.

Weather is an awe inspiring thing. I can remember watching storms build over the front range in CO. Seeing tornadoes grow was amazing but living through one is another - very happy you and yours are safe and sound!

Thank the Lord you are all okay. We had one pass within a few miles last June. It brought down limbs and trees in my part of town, damaged roofs and bent my fence -- on steel posts -- about 20 degrees. First time I have ever been awakened by the National Weather Service and the feeling of unbelief and helplessness was mighty uncomfortable. This one was without rain, but the lightning was incredible -- continuous, like flash bulbs at a 1960s press conference.

Glad you and the family are OK.
Friend went thru a F5, or should I say, left his house 3 min. before it hit. His mother-in-laws house down the road only had the foundation left, even took off the linoleum on the floor. His house had two walls left and his daughters car was thru the front door

Turns out the Tornado was an EF-2 tornado. I was very lucky. I lost part of the roof and got water soaked on the interior. Others further down the path did not fare as well. We don't have basements here in south Louisiana. Those would be called indoor pools.

We don't get lots of tornado activity here but within the last few years it seems to be more and more. It's a helpless feeling for sure.

Contractor came. Adjuster came. We will see how the insurance company handles it now.

Hope they treat you really well. We are under a tornado watch here in west central Texas, but I think and hope the threat has passed.

I've been up in the PA woods since last week. Just saw this.

Most important, like the others have said, is that everyone is ok!
Every ins. co. is different, but if you have any issues, please feel free to shoot me a PM.
Most likely the local adjusters are need deep in claims so they may take a bit of time to get estimates, etc. done.
Hopefully they have a Catastrophic Loss Team that can help.
I'm betting you're already done what you can to keep the place as dry as possible. Start an inventory of any personal items that were damaged.

Glad everyone is safe and have to say, I love that Louisiana accent! :D

No, thanks. We don't need for anything thankfully. We can manage with what we have and the parts of the house that was not damaged.

Thanks. My brother in law works with insurance companies and gave me a to do list before the adjuster came out. The adjuster came out and said that in his 15 years I was the first person that had prepared a spreadsheet of items that were damaged and items that were wet but could be cleaned/dried. Also already had a contractor's full bid/estimate to repair the home.

I was lucky and I am aware of this. While my house does have significant damage there are people further down the line who had much worse damage.

That's Great news for sure !! We had two south of us here in Ohio last night an EF1 and EF 0. I find it amazing how we can see the storms moving across the state on the weather. Had a lot of rain and wind here but No damage.
