Question on Winchester 71 Value?

Post by glock2240 »

I have run across a Model 71 Deluxe, SN 8xxx made in what 36 or 37, that has never been fired. One small nic on the stock where it was bumped into a table. It has the bolt peep sight. What is this ole gal worth?

I would imagine that an unfired, long-tang, with a bolt peep would go for at least $10k ... possibly more. I base this on seeing some similar 71's around 95% condition at around $6500. The problem is ... you just don't see a lot of pristine early (long tang) 71's with the bolt peep. I'd say you're really out there in the unpredictable zone on that one ... which makes pricing tough. If it were the carbine, it would be substantially higher.

I'm further jaded because I think the 71 is the pinnacle of the big Winchesters.

I believe there is a guy on the board here that has just that configuration (or perhaps it's the carbine) ... and I'm pretty sure you'll never see him part with it.

Does the peep still have it's insert? Those apparently are some of the first things to get lost on bolt peep guns.

Have you looked on Gunbroker for sold guns of a similar configuration? Not that you'll see any recently as "unfired" but there may at least be some long-tangs up there.

I would have to say that Rimfire McNutjob is right on the money. If its not worth 10 g's, it will be in the next couple of years. Anytime you find a hard to find gun in unfired condition, the difference between an unfired one and one in 99% condition can be as much as 30-40%----------Sixgun

Be sure to post some pictures after you buy it. You know you want it real bad!!  I know I would. That may be the last unfired 71 left. Tom
