Hornady 250gr RN bullets in 35 Remington

Post by big bear »

Two questions about a box of bullets I found in a crevice in my loading room... Hornady 35cal. 250gr. .358 Round nose. They are at least 40 years old, only the Lord nose why I bought them.Maybe for a 350 Remington MagnI owned briefly.I have a Savage 99 Brush gun in 38Win and a Marlin 35Rem.
1. Safe to use in the Marlin (tube magazine)?
2. If safe, has anyone had any experience using it in 35 Remington? I have no desire to use it in my Savage as I have "my load" for that rifle and use my Win 71 348Win with Barnes 250gr for big stuff.I have read it is great in 35Whelan. I have no need for a new 35cal rifle.Period!

Thanks!

A Quick Look at a few reloading manuals show the 35 Remington 200 grain bullet as the heaviest load. There may be other sources out there that go beyond that I don’t have though.

I think I had to find the same answer last year. The 250 gr Hornady RN is longer from the cannelure forward and is meant for the 35 Whelen. If seated to the cannelure the OAL is too long.
Hornady has a 200 gr RN meant for 35 Remington, but that’s not what you found…

I have loaded 250gr cast pills in my 35 Rem. I developed a load that clips along at 2000 fps and is very accurate (and safe in my rifle). As you probably are aware the 35 Rem has a twist rate of 1 in 16”, which is actually the same as Remingtons in 35 Whelen. The bullets stabilised well in that twist.

Assuming you have a Marlin, you’d need to use a Lee FCD to crimp the bullets in place to cycle in the rifle. More to the point I doubt you can get those bullets fast enough to expand. I’d suggest you sell or trade them for something more suitable like a 200 or 220gr pills.

Those will work fine in a 350 Remington Magnum or 358 Norma Magnum too. The will not expand and take a lot of case volume in a 35 Remington.

Those bullets will also work well in the 358 Win (basically a 35 Whelen using a 308 case instead of a 30-06).
